It reminds me of the old saying, Any system that has more laws than any person can reasonably know but in which ignorance of the law is no defense, is by definition an unjust decision. There should be something like that for game designers: Any system which is too complex for the designers to keep track of is by definition too complex.

That doesn't make any sense. A game designer forgets a minor rule, and all of a sudden the game is too complex?

D&D is designed so you don't have to remember every single minor rule. Instead you just remember the big stuff, and look up the details in the rulebook as it becomes relevant. That's why books have indexes.

I agree.

Besides, whilst D&D may have a relatively complex rules system, you'd expect that a designer would remember such a key feature of one of the most popular races for PCs. It's not like it was a rare special ability of some esoteric creature.

I'm also frustrated that the author and editor both failed to check the core rule book to get the details right. It undermines confidence in their writings.
