[WOTC] Core Rulebooks to be revised?

More from the catalog "These revisions are fully compatible with existing backlist products, and each title will include upgrade notes on how to integrate new information into existing campaigns."
The catalog goes on to say "The total amount of new and revised material is approximately 25%."

Each book is listed for July release with a US price of $29.95.

Well, this is comforting, but I'm still leery of spending 90 bucks on something I already have. Wait and see, I suppose.

Okay, onto what I suspect will be in the revised DMG and MM:

DMG:
* Better guidelines for creating new feats
* Better guidelines for creating new prestige classes
* Cleaned up NPC stat blocks. (Did you ever notice that the cleric has both a periapt and an amulet - they share the same slot!)
* Better guidelines for creating/pricing magic items
* Better descriptions of the Spot/Listen/Surprise rules
* Some new magic items, just to make the purchase more tempting. (Hopefully, the amulet of mighty fists will also make it into the core rules :)).

MM:
* Guidelines for creating new monsters
* Guidelines for monster PCs
* ECLs for common monsters that can become PCs
* Larger font, better formatting.
* Some new monsters, just to make the purchase more tempting for those of us who have it already

Have a look at MM2 for an idea what MM1 revised may look like.

I suspect that both the DMG and MM will be not as "essential" as the upgrade of the PHB, but they will be worth it enough that I will get them. :)

There are improvements that can be made to the rules and descriptions of the rules. The question is whether it will make the old books useless - I suspect not. It will be desirable to get the newer books, but given the amount of product that exists for the original version, the original version isn't going to be obsolete any time soon! :)

Consider that we were wondering exactly how many useful rulebooks WotC could print! Not many more, we thought. They wouldn't be able to sell many copies of a revision of the MotP, for instance, thus the revision can't be too radical as to invalidate them.

Another thing of minor import I think they might change in the PHB: Skill Focus to a +3 bonus. :)

Cheers!

hhhmmmmm....

Sounds like a good idea, but i cant help feeling a little like if i bought it that i'd be letting them screw me with my pants on.

seems kinda crappy that I have to shell out thrity or forty for these new revised editions each to get all the fixes and enhancements to the core books that i bought over two years ago for twenty bucks each.

I truly think you'll be easily able to ignore the revised books.

The new stuff will act as an incentive to those of us who can't resist this tactic. (I'm definitely going to get them! ;))

But the new books will be much, much better for new players, I think. (Remember how confusing the descriptions of AoOs are?)

Of course, I'm theorising, but that's the fun of ENworld, isn't it?

Cheers!

WOuld be nice ...

If they included all the Open Game Content Spells, feats, equipment, etc. That would make it worth buying.

I could huff and puff and say I won't buy them because it's only been a few years and blah blah blah - but realistically, if these books have all new artwork, I'd buy them even if they didn't contain any rules revisions. :)

I don't expect WotC to make the rules changes available for free, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a series of web enhancements that address any inconsistencies between the revised core books and the splatbooks. I expect a lot of the third party publishers will do something similar.

And I also wouldn't be surprised to see a new series of WotC "iconic" modules come out around the same time, since it would help to draw in new players.

If WotC want to keep the d20 system going, they're going to have to make the rules revisions available through the SRD. Otherwise, everyone will keep wanting the older books.

I very much doubt we'll see any more "iconic" modules - there isn't enough profit in it.

Cheers!

Personally, I think they should have some sort of trade-in system, or make the price $20 per book again. They have to realize that buying three books all over again isnt going to go over so smoothly for a lot of D&D players. The Star Wars market is smaller, and they only had to purchase a single new book, thats quite different from asking all the D&D players to buy three.

Is this just me, or does everyone else have problems imagining who the hell they are going to sell a revised MM to?

I mean revised PHB, bring it on. Echoing the sentiments of another poster on grapple, I'd buy it just so I could actually understand how that works.

Revised DMG, hmm, might be interesting but sounds like it'll be mostly flavour and not crunch (PrCs, campaign advice), which isn't really what's essential about the DMG? I think the DMG is pretty well-written anyway, just a tad disorganised, but nothing that can't be solved with a couple of little stickers on top of the pages (I've grabbed the exp table one so many times the ink has gone off).

But seriously, a revised MM? I can understand that they want to upgrade all 3 books and it's probably a good thing for people new to the game, but is this really worth their time and effort? Spacing the lay-out a bit and swapping the intro for the MM2 one, that hardly sounds like it's worth anyone's money. Unless they managed to explain improved grab along the way :D.
