WOTC: Mistress of Pain submissons, who's trying?

My hat's going in the ring as well. I haven't been writing all that fan fiction and Ceramic DM stuff just to miss this opportunity.

Heh. Well, I'm entering too. Good luck everybody!

Yes, good luck to everyone who does decide on submitting.

Does anyone know how much an author gets paid for something like this? Obviously just getting a book published is worth it by itself, but I was talking with a few of my friends and none of us had a real good idea of what an author makes money wise.

Usually, it's by the word or it's a flat fee. And the opportunity/publicity is worth more than the cash in this case, I think.

My advice to any previously unpublished author whose work is selected: GET A LITERARY AGENT. Their job is to make sure the contract you sign is equitable.

Mmm - write a PG-13 novel about the Realms' most explicitly fetishistic deity? That's quite a tough gig, actually; perhaps that's why they chose it. Half the submissions will go in the "warm leatherette" round file :D

I've (by choice) never read a game-related novel, ever, so I might be a little hazy about the sort of stuff they want. But I'll be giving the matter some thought, oh yes.

I'm in if I can think of a good storyline.

I don't mind the plot limitations so much as the location limitations.

Well, I'm out :).

The only consistent story writing I've done in my life is my story hour, started only this past fall, and while I've managed 32,000 words of pure narrative, for an actual novel I would want to edit and rewrite as well... which would at least double the time spent writing, and at a requested 90,000 words, would definitely push me past the deadline they give.

Not to mention - that would mean putting my story hour on hold for an entire year, because time spent writing the story hour would not be time spent meeting the deadline.

So... it's tempting, and I'd love to write for a living, but I don't think this is the best opportunity for me to do so. I'd rather continue to hone my craft for now, and submit something when I have something.

Good luck to those of you who are leaping for the brass ring today instead of tomorrow!

Well, I seriously recommend reading some GOOD fiction, but not necessarily gaming fiction.

Given how hard they're trying to steer people away from existing styles, I think WotC might actually be looking to get new types of gaming fiction out there. Once you commit to writing fiction set in a D&D universe, you're making some stylistic adjustments right off the bat -- assuming that you're actually showing that priests have to prepare spells and such.
