Given the clan use of the terms, I would not be too surprised if they removed the references to Wizard from the game eventually...
That particular version of clan isn't spelled with a C. And if we're going to go that far, Wizards of the Coast are going to have to change their name.

They're not removing it, just because 'it is such a classic class' (meaning 3e had it).

What?

OD&D had the class.

For reference, of the twelve core classes .... 75% of them (nine of them) appeared in OD&D in some form (either in OD&D proper or in a magazine), and they were all present in the core PHB in 1e.

Admittedly, some names did change (Magic User -> Wizard, Thief -> Rogue).

(Bard, Cleric, Druid, Fighter, Monk, Paladin, Ranger, Rogue, and Wizard)

The Barbarian was also added during 1e.

That leaves only two classes that were added later- the Sorcerer (3e) and the Warlock (3.5e), although there were versions of both in other materials before that.

But I do really wish Druids weren't a thing, when we can already have Nature Clerics. It's just conceptually muddy.
If we want to delineate more strongly, we should get rid of Nature Clerics (and Nature gods, really) rather than Druids.

"Druid" is a widely distributed and understood term of fantasy game jargon. If you say a character or class is a Druid in any fantasy media, there's an understood picture of roughly what type of character that is.
