WoTC "social networking" integration with EN World?

If the D&D team wants a good example of how to network with the fans, I suggest they take their example from RODNEY FREAKIN' THOMPSON. That man has had the best point of presence with his fans, from message boards to fan podcasts, and has been able to please his fanbase like no one I've seen at WotC lately. I'm sure there've been bad words said about SW Saga and Rodney, but the majority of the fan interaction I've seen has been nothing but respect. WotC cancels the line recently, and what has the majority of comment been? "Thank you, Rodney, for an awesome job." I'm not saying the D&D team has been lax (unlike what was going on in about 2003-2005 IMO) but whatever he's been doing, he's been doing it right.

I suspect by "social networking", WoTC is trying to make their presence known where people are talking about them.

With the rise of Facebook & Twitter, I think companies are learning that they might need to have more presence in other locations rather than doing everything on their own sites. I suspect this is a change from the old Gleemax approach where they tried to dominate.

So go to the blogs, the message boards, the other communites...seems simple enough...

There are many things to say on why *ahem* certain 'social' skills were missing back then.

But if the effort is being made sincerely today...more power to them.

Alas...they should have done that...6 years ago.

Sorry for the thread going off topic - it wasn't the intention :/

And so, to get back on it...

I have to admit, I don't follow WoTC people/news etc (for the most part), so I had not heard of Rodney - but as you mentioned him I did a little search and ran into his blog on the wotc boards, which had a post about making adventures better... which made me think, "this sounds familiar" - sure enough, he has posted that around a few places soliciting feedback.

I know that is how I would do it if I were in the same position - I would want to put out the best material possible, and how do you do that without knowing what your consumer is looking for.
