I like Zaknafein, but yuck.
First, breaking bounded stats for humanoid NPCs is a big no-no for me (unless epic boons are involved, I suppose?).
Second, this lends credence to the idea that big damn heroes need big damn stats, and no flaws at all! What a Gary Stu.
Third, Zaknafein's player clearly rolled those stats rolling 3d6, in order. Believe him, his brother was with him when he rolled, he saw the whole thing, no cheating involved! :)

It just means your PCs are gonna need to pull their weight to surpass said heroes/npcs/shakers of the world. That or they just should've stayed farmers.

Canadian, eh? :p Yeah, I don't care about the bench press, or really about real world comps. I don't have mental space reserved to quibble about how strong my fantasy elves are, so my boundaries for 'what makes sense' are very much proscribed by some pretty fuzzy notions of genre appropriateness. One of the problems with D&D stats is that they represent a lot of different things, and are counted by different metrics. The 20 STR, so far as it relates to combat and damage, doesn't seem out of place for the character, which is my primary concern. It also means he can carry/lift X and Y, which might not be as appropriate, but you can't have one without the other. The artificial split between STR and DEX means there isn't much middle ground, and in this case the character is supposed to be a master with weapons that the game doesn't grant the finesse rule to. I would be just as happy to have him be 16 STR with the ability to use certain non-finesse weapons with DEX in combat.

I want my NPC's to be interesting, and flawed. This depiction of Zaknafein isn't interesting, it's a perfect dude. The kind of self-insert NPC my friends and I would put in the game when we were 13 years old.

I guess ironically that matches the Gary Su nature of Drizzit. Like Father, like son.
