Would you allow carte blanche power selection?

People, this thread is about thinking outside the box. Niggling little things like "you can't sneak attack with a magic missile" really isn't relevant. We're bending the rules as it is, use a little imagination and creativity.

I assumed when he got to pick his at-will abilities from any class, the actual text of those abilities still applied. Does he still require combat advantage, and is it still limited to once per round? Or can we use imagination and creativity to get rid of those restrictions as well?

Okay, I power attack for 100. With my magic missile. Uh, and I'm wielding it two handed.

And don't give me any niggling little "rules" reason why I can't.

I agree, but I believe *this* exercise may be a little premature. I'd be much more comfortable seeing more feats, powers, and (especially) the multi-classing rules in context before I begin such fundamental tinkering.

that said, I am confident that a completely a-la carte character building system will be a very popular 4e variant.

I would also, set limits based on the character, ie: a frail wizard can't pick Barbarian Powers.

Why? A frail wizard won't be able to take full advantage of a barbarian's powers, so if they suit his/her player's character why not let him/her have them?

I would definitely consider it. I'm not convinced that it will work that easily "out of the box" but I believe it could with some minor tinkering.

I think the easiest thing to do would be to allow abilities to be chosen from within each Power. So, choose any Martial power, or choose any Divine, but don't mix them. I think that would work, from what we've seen, right from the get go. Doing more than that would take some care.

For a one-shot, I'm not terribly bound by restrictions. I'd not base a large group in campaign play on such constructions unless I had the full ruleset in front of me.

I'd like to ask those heftily rules-oriented folks in here to please cool it a little - it isn't' like we have the full rules text for anything yet, so nitpicking on rules details is apt to be... less than constructive. And, if you really can't help but nitpick, don't be snarky about it - what you read as fun-loving another can often read as heftily sarcastic, and that does ugly things to the tone of the thread.

We will probably do something like this eventually, as I know certain players in my group like this kind of style. For now we'll probably stick to the rules and only modify small things that annoy us...
Major changes like these should really wait until we have a full grasp of the new rules...

This is an interesting issue, and something I'd consider.

To do this, I'd take a look at the number of class abilities you get at first level, and then let you mix and match them so long as the total number adds up to what you normally start with. From what I understand, that's sort of the way that the multiclass system will work, so I imagine one could use that as an inspiration.

I think I'd want to have a much better handle on how everything works together before attempting this, though.
