Would you pay for cool features?

I'm not sure what the law is in England, but I know here, the "donations" would be counted as taxable income to Morrus unless he filed to be a non-profit organization (which costs money and lots of paperwork). I just hope this doesn't come back and bite him later.

This place IS my second home...

So I would gladly donate money to support it - even without the titles or any other extras. But since you're offering them... :D

btw - Any chance we'll see the return of html?

You learn something new every day! I did not know that? I know it's probably to stop the "Al Capone" effect, but darned if the gov't doesn't get its paws in every cash till there is...

You might want to check on this, Morrus! Does England have similar laws on freewill donations?

I'm all in favour. Not for the extra 'cool' features, but to help with the running costs of the server - I've a fairly good idea of how horrendous that can get, even on a smallish scale.

I check the main site a couple of times a day for the news, and less often the message boards - usually during the evening when I'm not utterly sick of having been sat in front of a screen all day, and lurk more than post, but the amount of entertainment as well as useful ideas and so on that I get from even such cursory use is more than worth a donation IMO.

It's down to apathy really that I haven't chipped in anything before now - I'd contribute by using the online store but when I have to pay the cost of the item again in transatlantic shipping it's just easier to throw that custom to my FLGS instead. Besides, I like to ensure that they get regular custom. :)

If there's any way of setting up a UK/European equivalent then it would be so much easier to place regular orders there and incidentally help out with the site's costs. Don't suppose it's possible to do anything with Esdevium for us Yurpians is it?

Morrus - since I'm pretty much just up the road from you I suspect the easiest (and most cost-effective) method is to mail you a sterling cheque...

PayPal is more hassle than it's worth for me, but writing a cheque is a no-brainer, especially since payday just happened... :)

Morrus - if you can let me have a suitable address where you'll be able to receive a donation I'll put one in the post tonight - feel free to mail me details if (sensibly) you don't wish to put your home address up on the boards.

Let me know - I'd hate to see the site suffer for lack of cash.

Morrus, just thought of something ...

I participate in another site where the message boards came to use more traffic than the main site and they had to switch to a voluntary payment system. Its Ars Technica and the only other "daily" site I have. The guys who run it, Caesar and Hannibal, are really cool and I am sure if you dropped them a line they would be more than willing to give you a few tips on what to expect.

Plus, they just finished their finals, so they've got a little time now :) I hope they can help (even though they are Piratecat's neighbors, not yours).

<edit>

finally got around to reading the whole thread and i have to say:

[RANT]

i'm really disappointed, and maybe even a lil disgusted at some of the comments made. i visit this site everal times a day, and judging by the frequency of posts, i know i'm not the only one. even if most people only come here a few times a week, the quantity and quality of information here easily out-paces almost any other source, online or print. not to mention the fact that there's such a strong sense of community here!

people complaining that about spending the cost of a cup of coffee or two per month, clearly don't have much of a sense of value, when it comes to what they have here. this place has provided me with more information and entertainment than practically any other single site/publication. as has been mentioned by some, it's just like home.

the cost of one d20 book surely can't be all that much! especially when so many of them are such crap anyway. i'm unemployed and on an EXTREMELY tight budget. but in no good concience can i agrue with spending a lousy $2/month for something that i already get so much from. the notion that one won't pay for something that they've already been getting for free is born purely out of selfishness and greed. absolutely shamefull!

for the record, i would pay to get the upgrade, even without the extra features. altho i do miss the search feature. and getting that "too busy" message is always a horrible experience. i think that people bitching about a voluntary number is disgraceful. even more so when that amount is practically negligable. $25 a year. a YEAR!!!!! how many time will you visit this site and find something useful in a whole year?

now i know that everyone has a right to express their opinion, and that peoiple saying that $25 is too much will likely end up being useful to Morrus, as he does need to know how many think so, but i still stand by my statement that it's shameful to put such a low value on something so useful as this place.

every now and then a "why are people like this" thread appears where someone has witnessed something distasteful in their lives. invariably, it gets hundreds of views and dozens of posts, all in opposition of the subject of siad thread, who misleads a stranger asking for directions, for example. everyone is all up in arms about these "uncivilised people" we are all forced to live with. are we actually better?

[/RANT]

now that i've got that off my chest ... i'm sure i saw somewhere Morrus saying that he dosen't like the idea of askingfor money, but i gotta tell you, my memry is the worst imaginable! as much as i want to help out, if you don't set up a system to remind me annually, i'll likely forget. :D

great ideas to check on the tax implications! good catch. also, a one stop, in country, point for donations coming out of the UK, and one bulk cheque, might be a way of getting around the "i have no credit card" problem that some people have. i don't have one either, but i do have family who i can use to send the donations through and give them the actual cash.

best of luck, hope my support will help!

I would be well up for it, and if anyone in Europe wants to pay without a credit card I would be glad to help them out, im sure something could be sorted.

Wow, Negative Zero, I think your post was badly needed. You have summarized my thought when I read all those post againt paying $2/month for such a wonderful community. Thanks!
