What i think could be added to the half elf is the +1 bonus to skills per level.

The half elves already have an extra feat: the low light vision. The only difference is that you can´t choose it.

I don´t think it´s just an powergaming issue. D&D is a role playing game, so it´s a GAME where you role play.

Then, game balance is an important thing to keep in mind.

I see the "half elves problem" just like the "sorcerer problem( be the face of the party and have the charisma as his main attribute, but have no skills based on charisma): lack of consistance between the story description and the game mechanic.

Thank you Ukyo, perfect example of what I'm talking about

I think most half-races don't make any sense, and the half-elf is just a very good example of that. There are all the different ways human and elven blood might end up mixing, and all half-elves end up with the same set of stock abilities?

I think all half-breeds ought to be done like this: "Half-whatever racial traits: "Choose 5 points worth of traits from the following list." Price them accordingly, and let players pick.

Or, if you don't feel like going to all the trouble, and someone wants to play a half-elf for flavor reasons (pretty much the only reason anyone would choose a half-elf right now anyway) tell him to choose which side of the family he favors and use human or elf stats, none of that current half-assed BS.

I've always like the idea of the half-elf -- doesn't fit in anywhere, etc. These days, when I feel the urge to play it, I just play a human and claim that I am 1/4 elven -- that extra human feat is really nice (especially since I tend to play a lot of wizards). I have no idea how I'd balance it, though.

I really like the idea that most PCs I see are human -- D+D should be human-centered.

Not Broken- Just Bland

I used to play 1/2 elves better than 50% of the time. Now, I see little offered to be one. I'm not saying they are unbalanced, I am just saying that there seems to be no reason TO play one.

Humans- bonus feat, Skills, choice of Class
Dwarves ability alterations, racial skills
Elves- ability alterations, racial skills, weapon bonuses
Gnomes- ability alterations, spell abilities, size considerations
1/2 lings- ability alterations, save bonuses, size considerations
1/2 Orc- ability alterations.....

1/2 elf- choice of class......... elven blood

They are a neutral race that is balanced, but dosen't allow to take avantage of a bonus ability or power. Thus they tend (at least to me) to be ignored/over looked.

Not broken- just bland

Sounds like Skills & Powers of 2nd which I found was highly abrused

Half-Elves are currently a wasted choice.

I hope 3.5e brings them parity with the other races (and while they're at it, tone down the Dwarf a notch or two).

I'll reserve judgement.

And yes, it *is* all about the numbers for some of us.

Well your sig file is honest enough

Balance before Flavor. Crunch before Fluff. Games before Stories.

Its the complete opposite of how I play but as they say YMMV
