The half elves already have an extra feat: the low light vision. The only difference is that you can´t choose it.
I don´t think it´s just an powergaming issue. D&D is a role playing game, so it´s a GAME where you role play.
Then, game balance is an important thing to keep in mind.
I see the "half elves problem" just like the "sorcerer problem( be the face of the party and have the charisma as his main attribute, but have no skills based on charisma): lack of consistance between the story description and the game mechanic.
