Actually, there seem to be more groups that don't use prestige classes then you'd think.

True. My group has used a couple but with mixed results. No one likes them for some reason

So the Half-Elf doesn't have abilities that make it "all powerful". I don't see a problem with Half-Elves as they are now, neither does anyone I play with...and that's obvious from our last game. We had a party of 7 Half-Elves, a full Elf, and a Human. Why? Because Half-Elves are REALLY fun for RP reasons.

Half-Elf Characters

I'm playing a half-elf cleric in 3rd edition, and I'm having a blast. I see no need to modify the race.

If half-elves are week you probably don't even want to hear about my half-elf bard.

I don't see any need to power up the half-elf. If you want to play a more powerful character, don't play a half elf. Some players actually enjoy playing statistically challenged characters. I'm not a number cruncher myself, but I have played with players that enjoy trying to survive with weaker characters.

I dont want to play a more powerful character. I want to play a half human, half elf who isnt just an elf without all the elf abilities. and who measures up to the other races statiticaly.

Have you tried the half elf yet in a campaign or are you just eyeing the abilties and making a guess? I only ask because it seems that the people who have actually played the race are the ones claiming it's just fine.

I did once briefly. I played a half elf bard rather briefly...I made him half elven because I like the half elf personality especialy for a bard...but it was a hard choice since elves and humans both get more substatial benefits...and it felt odd because all his racial abilities, for my character, were those of an elf.but like I said my biggest beef with it is stylistic...and I've wondered about it through all editions of the game. Personaly, I think they should get the extra skill points as a human. certainly not over powerful but a nice little benefit and it really shows a contribution from the human side...that is defintily going to come into play.

I made up one yesterday having not played one in 10 or so years, first H/E character Ive done in 3E and it seemed ok. Its not 'uber' by any means but then again its not going to wreck the GM's game either in terms of balance.

I see that I'm not the only one that feels that Half Elves kinda got shafted. My first 3E character is a Half Elven rogue. 2nd Edition Half Elven thieves were awesome, so I just jumped right in with a Half Elven rogue. And while the Half Elven part really plays well into this character's Chaotic Neutral characteristics and personality, he really hasn't benefited a great deal from what the Half Elf race offers. I was thinking of giving half elves either a bonus feat at 1st level or extra skill points at every level, THEN I found out that the Scarred Lands Half Elf has an extra bonus to it. They get the extra skill point at every level like humans do, but I don't think that they get the extra 4 at first level. So, Sword and Sorcery has revised the Half Elf somewhat. That definitely makes them more interesting to play to me as I really like playing (and can easily see) a Half Elf as a rogue or bard.

I don't pick the race I play based upon it's powers. I [pick the race for the character idea I have in my head.
I can;t imagine picking a race or class based upon any advantages or disadvantages it has. that is just weird
