What's more interesting: having a bonus that you use once (when creating your character) and never think of again, or a trait that you can actively use all the time?

I'd be all for that, especially if they added more of them, using that feat and a half of design space that floating ASIs are currently taking a giant dump on.

Because a floating +2/+1 could be placed in something the player finds useful.

That's why I'm liking Level Up, since it's all about the customizable, flavorful heritage abilities and the ASIs are attached to background, not race or class.

There certainly are some. You can see it when people comment on Twitter every time a new option is presented.
