I was personally glad to see them cast someone as old as Sir Ian. I think it adds to the character having him be older (and by implication wiser). Having him be that indistinct middle age that many comic book characters are is just bland.

This is all IMO, por supesto.
 

Aging Magneto made sense. After all he was never meant to be immortal in the original comics. He was in the concentration camp as a child, and in the 60s, that's not that grand for a young guy. Then real time kicked in at full speed, while comic time went really, really really slowly. What we get? A 60something old man looking like he was thirty.

They also aged him somewhat in the Ultimate Universe, although not quite to same extent as in the movie. I'm not sure if he was supposed to have been in the concentration camps at all there.
