You arrive last to the first game session and the other guys have decided that you be the leader. What class will you pick?

Background thread
Why is the support role given the glorified title of leader at all? Selecting a "leader" class does not seem to mean that you will be leading anything other than your own ego.

I'm pretty sure that's not the question. If "leader"/support is a "required" part of the group, and you get that role, which way do you want to play it?

For myself, I'd say bard. Barring that, warlord, assuming it's a cleaned up marshal class.

It's called "Leader" because the word "support" gives many players a bitter taste in their mouthes. "Support" usually equates to "Sidekick, here to patch you up and give you gatoraid after slaying that dragon."

Leader sounds more positive.

It does not, however, make you the decision maker for the Party.

To make a further distinction. In Werewolf, a Pack (party) has an Alpha (leader). That Alpha can be of any Aspect (Class). The Alpha makes the final call when it comes to Pack decisions, is the general Authority within his Pack.

Same deal here.

If I'm to be "leader" (and what party decides on its leader before a turn or two in the field to see how everyone interacts?) I'd play a Wizard of some sort. Wizards have the brains, and are often out of melee meaning they're in the best position to analyze the situation and direct traffic. If the intent is that I also act as spokesman for the party in dealings with others, I'll chuck a decent stat into Charisma and go from there...

I said Cleric because, quite frankly, I've been playing Clerics and Druids as first choice right from when I was first introduced to 2nd Edition 15 years ago!

Of course, my clerics tend not to be leaders in the classical sense, so people wanting an actual Leader might be disappointed in me...

That's like saying "Next year, you'll go to lunch somewhere and eat some bird. Will you eat something with turkey or chicken."

I don't know what dishes will be available for either bird. Maybe everything turkey will be extravagant stuff that's too fancy and expensive for me. Maybe, after I know where I'll be going, someone tells me that their chicken stuff tastes awful.

I also don't know what exactly I'll want to eat then. Maybe it turns out that I'd rather eat duck.

Finally, what keeps me from eating chicken one day, and turkey the next?

Wizards would indeed fit the role of the leader. But they aren't the only ones capable of leading. Of the classes that are in this poll, the warlord should get to lead. A successful warlord MUST be a good leader, since being a warlord presupposes having a group of people (an army most likely) under your command. A warlord with noone to lead is just a fighter. Therefore, I wouldn't mind if warlords got certain bonuses from high CHA and INT.
