If I was chosen as the "Leader", I would rule with an iron thumb over the other party members and only dish out my healing to those who followed unquestionably my desires.

I mean if we have to be pigeonholed into certain roles than why not use it to your advantage?

If Warlord is Barbarian/Marshal*, as I expect it to be, put me in as a Warlord.

* in that, the Warlord gets the Rage abilities of a Bbn, as well as the ability to "rally" his allies, giving them similar abilities as a Rage, and whatever the Marshall gets, as I understand.

Leader sounds more positive.

It does not, however, make you the decision maker for the Party.

To make a further distinction. In Werewolf, a Pack (party) has an Alpha (leader). That Alpha can be of any Aspect (Class). The Alpha makes the final call when it comes to Pack decisions, is the general Authority within his Pack.

Same deal here.

Not the same deal at all - as they describe it, the "alpha/leader" is tied to class. They are not separable.

If having the "leader" role doesn't make you the decision maker, then when it comes to final party decisions, the character is not the general Authority. I don't want authority linked to class choice in any way, shape, or form. That's for the characters to sort out in game.

While "Support" may seem like a bad name for a role, "Leader" carries far too much connotation baggage to mean anything like the same thing.

Bard. I've played pure support bards in the past and enjoyed it, and if they clean up the class enough that you don't need splatbooks to make it work, I'll enjoy it even more.

And if they don't have bards? That your choice for the support/inspiration/morale role is warlord or cleric?

Why include an "other" choice then? ;)

If I showed up for character creation, and the group told me I had a choice of two classes, I don't think a character would get created at all, if it came down to that. :\ Now if I wanted to play a support role and there was no bard class, I would probably go with a cleric, as long as 4e still had rules for godless clerics.

And I'm saying that the Leader role offers no authority. Its abilities are just associated with tactical thinking and general Auras, from the sound of it.
