You know what? I think I'm done with XP

I am going to swipe your system Rel, hope you don't mind. Of all the ones I have seen that seems to be the most balanced and offers the most for players that really pay attention to the overall flow of the game, and not just combat.

I also like the Player XP, and I might use that also. Combined, I might have a group of players that will actually care about playing and having a good time instead of the I roll to hit, do damage, get XP syndrome that happens so often.

Thanks guys, you are all great and good ideas.

Previously, I just did XP as normal in the DMG, and now I have a different way of handing out xp. thanks. :D

Yes, well there's the thing. My personal issue isn't with the number of XP per encounter, but the assumed number of encounters per hour.

Yes, if all you're doing is concentrating on getting through encounters, you can churn through one an hour without too much strain. But where would you find time to play your role? :)
Remember, the 13.333 encounters per level assumes that each encounter is in the "taxes the party 20%" category. If all of your encounters are tougher than that then you will not have 13.3333 per level and you won't have 1 per hour. You will have fewer encounters per level and less than 1 per hour.

We play once a week for 4 weeks and then don't play that game again for 3 months (so essentially we play once a month) and leveling up every 2-3 sessions is perfect for us.

Thanks for the compliment and you are of course welcome to it. That's why I posted it after all.

If you are interested, I also have an Excel spreadsheet that one of my players created (yup, I gave him "Creation" points for it too) that lets you vary the "X Factor" that I multiply the tic marks by. It shows you how many sessions it will take to get to each level and the aggregate number of sessions until any given level is reached with a given multiplier. It also lets you vary the number of tic marks so you can see the effects of being more liberal or more strick in how you "grade their papers".

E-Mail me if you would like a copy of the spreadsheet or if you have any other questions about the system. I'd also love to hear from you sometime about how effective you found the system and what if any changes you would recommend.

How's about saying there can only be "X" amount of expendible XP per level...or that they can make "Y" amount of items/spells/etc.

Say, the moment you gain the Scribe Scroll feat, you gain XP equal to your level x 25 to spend on making a magic item.

If you gain more item creation feats, you gain more XP.

Learning certain spells will give you XP to spend, too.

So that, once you know Wish, you can actually have something to cast it with.

Maybe?

Psion, how often do you find you level at that rate?

Well, if you do the math, that's once every 20 hours. A little less as a 10%-20% bonus (for player ingenuity, roleplaying, or a difficult session) is fairly common, and when completing a major campaign goal I'll grant a 50% bonus. Our sessions are 4-5 hours and they end up levelling every 3 or 4 sessions. My 1 1/2 year old campaign is at 17th level, though admittedly I didn't start using that session until part way through or so.

D'oh! That teaches me to post without reading the entire thread, eh? Good suggestions by the way, although players who are not using item creation feats and spells that cost experience may feel "cheated."

I am slowly starting to do something like KM.

My "balance" to the Item creation would use something like the "schools" in FFG's Path of Swords and Path of Magic books. Little extra "gimicks" that others could learn by spending some of their XP pool.
