Your Favorite TV shows of All time

Jack7

First Post
All this talk of new TV shows made me sort of nostalgic. I don't and never really have watched a lot of TV. Even as a kid. Most of my buddies and my two brothers even had TVs in their bedroom. I never have and never will. But that didn't mean I didn't have favorite shows over my lifetime.

Here are some of my favorite shows of all time. Not in any particular order. Lost, Battlestar Galactic, Kung-Fu, Twin Peaks, the Prisoner, Twin Peaks, Sherlock Holmes, and Star Trek are my favorite television shows of all time. Of my favorite shows I've probably seen every episode.

In order to make my "all-time favourites" list, the show has to mean more to me than mere entertainment. I have to develop some sort of personal connection to the message, the characters, or something about the show.

For instance, growing up I pretty much raised myself. MASH & Family Ties formed a LARGE part of my morality, humour and how I viewed the world; which probably explains why I'm so messed up.

M*A*S*H (both pre & post Alda's takeover)
Northern Exposure (except for season 7 which I don't recognise as officially existing)
House
Buffy
Angel
Firefly
Cheers
Frasier
Family Ties
Horatio Hornblower

There´s only 2 shows (so far) on my list, and in order:

X-files
Lost

Asmo

I am not a big fan of watching repeat shows, so very few shows pass my test of repeat watchability. As far as TV shows go, I think I have one on my list.

Firefly.

(I don't have any particular favorite shows).

In recent times, the episodes of tv shows which I watched multiple times in reruns, would be shows in the Star Trek, Stargate, Law & Order, and CSI franchises, along with Without a Trace, Criminal Minds, and Cold Case.

During the 1990's, the episodes of shows I watched multiple times (usually in reruns) would be Silk Stalkings, the Star Trek franchises, and Beavis & Butthead.

During the 1980's, the episodes of shows I watched multiple times would be "Get Smart" (in reruns), and the original Star Trek + the Next Generation.

Buffy, Firefly, ST:TNG, and DS9 get enough repeat viewings, and have worked themselves into my vocabulary to be called "all time favs", while Futurama, Simpsons, BSG, and Lost are just on the cusp.

In no particular order ....
Star Trek DS9, Star Trek TNG, Firefly, Ducktales, Gargoyles, Pirates of Dark Water, Avatar the Last Airbender, Golden Girls, Three's Company, Batman the Animated Series

Maybe on the list: Futurama (this ends up being hit or miss with me; but enough 'hits' that i look forward to it as one of my favorites), Young Justice (a new show but it has all the things that typically make for a good show in my book. only time will tell but i can definately see this being a favorite so far in the long run), Conan the Adventurer (90s cartoon. a favorite for it's plots that were mostly good more than its actual dialogue or animation, the later two points were generally medicore or subpar)

I am sure I am forgetting something at the moment...

Wow, there are a ton of shows that I could name that shaped my psyche, or were favorites when they aired, but as for shows that I would watch regardless.

M*A*S*H* - Probably the greatest single TV show of all time. Regardless of the Alda mentality in later episodes or whatnot, it was scripted, acted and shot unlike any other show before or since.

Star Trek - In terms of ground breaking, this is up there. Special effects on a shoe string that are cheesy and yet somehow, forgivable.

and speaking of cheesy and forgivable -

Dr. Who - No, not the recently shot stuff, the BBC serials of old, with Patrick Houghton, John Pertwee and Tom Baker. Those were "my" Dr.s, all seen in re-runs via PBS but made such a large part of my weekday afternoons after school. With a budget smaller than my weekly allowance in the 80s, I still kept coming back so they must have done something right.

The Simpsons - The longest running show on TV, for good reason. The continuity is disregarded, the characters never age and somehow, it stays current, even when you are watching episodes that are obviously dated.

Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C - Okay, this is my guilty pleasure. I hated Andy Griffith but was forced to watch it due to my family, but this, they hated it and I loved it - paybacks suck. I still record episodes when they come on by accident. SHAZAM!!!

Honorable Mentions:
ST:TNG - after season 1, I loved this show. Usually... but not always
Buffy/Angel - Great acting, writing and directing...usually. Some times though even I went...huh?
Happy Days - Gave us that wonderful phrase... "Jumping the Shark"
Big Bang Theory - Not been on long enough to be considered an all time fave. If I still watch it re-runs in a couple of years, it may move up to the list.
