Your favorite "villain" race and why?

Well, I like to put the villeanous spin on the traditional races aswell.

Elves have already been mentioned above.

Dwarfs make excellent villains, not to mention building strongholds, temples and dungeons that anyone fears.

I've also used a version of the cannibalistic Halflings from Monte's Dragon Magazin Article for great effect .. creepy little guys.

Besides that I favor Doppelgangers and plain ol humans.

If you can see that it's a bad guy (Mindflayers, Orcs, Drow, Beholders) from quick look at it, it doesn't really do it for me as a villain...
Cannonfodder? yes.
Challenging fight? Yes.
Villain? no!

I guess GG's villans all through the GDQ super module where some of the most memorable, jez, my characters L32 and the bastards still pop up from time to time... I really should get around to soulcaging a few more of them instead of just throwing them in a portable hole and rupturing it.

Giants are lots of fun, you always know youre in for a tough fight when they turn up in any numbers.

There is an old fav though, whenever Ive run it or as a player is the good ol Orc. Now yeah, they arent so tough when your a few levels higher, they arent smart, clever or classy, but how many of us have had one of these stinky retards with a tulwar or axe tear the arse out of some lowbie character? I'd say its happened to just about damn near anyone who's played for any length of time, and hey 8000 of the buggers cresting the ridge over your favorite town and going hardcore on it give most people a good pause

But I also think Hobgoblins are vastly underused.

Children. Never underestimate the damage caused by a few moments unattended, and a single crayon held within those chubby little fingers!

Beholders: The party wizard getting a little too egotistical? Throw one of these critters at him and watch how quickly he'll ask the party warriors for help.
