When you sit down at the table, how do you feel about your typical game session? I've included a few polling options; I'm certain these aren't inclusive enough to please everyone, so feel free to discuss your perspective further.

Please God don't let me suck tonight; Please God don't let me suck tonight; Please God don't let me suck tonight....

That's usually what I'm thinking.

I pose this question as an opportunity for introspection: How much of your personal gaming style is a reflection of what you expect in life in general? The cleric's healing thread elsewhere on this board, for example, revealed a rift between those who expect cure spells for the good of the group versus those who don't expect anything in particular. In line with this thread, I wonder how they treat their coworkers or friends. Are you bossy and know what's best for other people? Are you focused on crafting the perfect character and getting the bestest stuff level after level? Do you step up to offer abilities/skills, or are do you wait for an invitation? ... That sort of thing.

I picked the only one that said anything about character development. I want to see the PCs grow into heroes, and tell a great story while doing it.

IMO, the mark of a good game only becomes apparent after-the-fact. Are you still talking about it months and years later? Is it memorable?

:D

Are you speaking as DM or PC, Crothian?

seriously...hanging out is the number one......and then I am all about the group working towards its goal, but I always have my own agenda and backstory.

of course it depends on the game too....I had one DM that was all hack-n-slash....it didn't matter one bit if I wanted to work on my character motivation....in that instance it was all about the hanging out with friends which made it difficult to leave because I wanted more out of my gaming group.

As a DM I usually have an outline of how I think things will progress and I'm thinking about how to get the game going and describe the environment and events for the players to act upon. I get ready to have the world react to the player's actions.

As a player I generally look forward to experiencing and reacting against the DM's world as a specific character. I get into my characters mindset and want to dive in to the world.
