Your job as DM

Seconded. The type of fun may (and often does) vary from session to session, and there are various approaches to achieving it, but at the end of the day that's what it's all about.

Well it's all about everyone having fun, as everyone else has said. I like to think that I can also get something memorable (I dread coming to a table and the players not being able to remember what happened last week, fortunately that's not happened in a while).

So memorable encounters, NPCs and monsters. And something where the players either laugh, or sit and enviously say "coool..." before drooling like Homer thinking about donughts with a rasberry glaze.

I'm an Elite Game Master. I don't ever mingle with hobbyist gamers. I don't have a job as an EGM. The players worship the ground I walk on as I become the adventure...

My job, as GM, is to create a self-consistent and interesting world in which the players can have their characters adventure. I do not consider it my job to make sure that the players I have are having fun; rather, I consider it my job to find players who find the same stuff fun that I do. If that means some players leave my group because our tastes don't match, that's cool; if they're worth having to my home for a game, they're worth getting together with over a beer outside of gaming so it's not like I lose touch with interesting people who try my games and find their tastes don't match mine.

In a broad sense, my job as GM is to provide an rpg experience that's enjoyable for all my players.

Now, in different games, this means different things. The exact execution of this mandate varies by genre and group.

Quite. That involves several other tasks -- referee, worldbuilder, director, actor, etc. -- but all are subordinate to, and components of, the fun.

I don't want it to be my job at all. I'm there to play, not to work. My goal is to have fun telling an interactive story. Anything that gets in the way has to go.
