Your original die

Well, barring all the six-sideds over the years in various board games like Clue...

My first die was dice -- a set. I got them at the Lawrence Hall of Science back in 1974, a year before I heard of D&D. They were being sold as "The Five Platonic Solids As Dice!", very cute and gimmicky and I had no particular use for them other than that they were cool and funky.

Little did I know that a year later I would need them for a game!

The dice were the original Ultra-Low Impact Plastic. The D20 and the D12 became balls by the end of a year of gaming. The D6 chipped off one of its corners. The D4 was a nasty little caltrop. And amazingly I still have my green D8!

Ah, memories...

I still have my first set of dice, from the red basic box, in a Crown Royal bag stored inside a metal G.I. Joe lunchbox (does that score double geek points or what?) with some other really old stuff I keep for posterity. Those plastic dice are all worn down, their once-square edges now rounded off from use.

I have a hard time throwing anything away.

Do you have/remember your first die?

Yeah, but I haven't been playing nearly as long as a lot of people here. The one is wearing off, though. I don't know if that's good or bad.

That means you're rolling a lot of 20s, so I'd say it's good! :)

I was digging through my box of neglected dice last night and stumbled upon my first d20's. I remember buying two of them in about 1982 and having to fill in the numbers.

I rolled so poorly two weeks ago when we played that I'll be using them Saturday when we play again. Hopefully, they'll work better then those new-fangled dice that come with the numbers already filled in.

I got my first set of RPG dice at a hobby store here in Argentina. They came inside a white paper box with a photocopy of the spanish basic red box D&D (or that's what I assume it was). Just like the book, they were cheap soft plastic knock-offs (they included a diamond shaped d6)...

I eventually got my cutter and proceeded to cut their edges (which had thin plastic borders from the cast they were made in... whatever you call that stuff...). Later on I realized that tidying up the borders probably ruined their balance, so they weren't trustworthy anymore... anyhow, I don't know if I every got to actually play with them.

Last time I saw them, they were in a backpack that got stolen when thieves broke into my house... so they're out there... somewhere... it was a nice backpack... I hope I unbalanced them so they roll low.

Alas my first set has long since disappeared over the years. They were a dark blue set of Dragon Dice. I remember using a needle to dig out the waxed in numbers and trying a different colored crayon, to see what kind off look I liked best, and finally stuck with green, though maroon was nice also. My second and third sets were yellow and orange respectively. I still have a few of these sets, especially the yellow ones. With one or two die that have come up missing, all other sets I've obtained since (around six or seven sets, not counting unique die like the D30 and D100) have remained complete.

One thing stands out in my mind about the old sets of Dragon Dice (well from the mid to lat '80's), eventually all the cornes would start to chip and round off. Especially on the twenty siders.

A few years back I bought each of my kids a set of the over sized dice for christmass as stocking stuffers. Of three sets, there are only 4 dice left (maybe). My youngest would also roll his dice and call out the numbers, or would ask until he learned them in the case of the twenty sider (having just turned three at the time). So far none of them show any interest in gaming, but I figure they've still got a few years to go.

:) But the die isn't as easy to read as it used to be! I guess your first set isn't always the highest quality, though.

I still have my first set I got with e Basic set, I don't use them anymore because they are not in the best of shape a few of them have canine teeth marks in them.

Ran out of food in those days, Croth?

My first set (from 2000) is still in my dice bag with the ones I've gotten since then.

Haven't really used them.
