I'd be surprised if most people here don't still have their original set.
I didn't have my own dice prior to getting back into gaming in college. So naturally I still have my first die, but relatively speaking, it's not that old; only 10-12 years or so. Maybe not even quite that.

My first d20 (1978) is stowed away in a little box that also contains the lapel pin from my first RPGA membership (1981) and a bunch of prize ribbons from area conventions -- mostly for historical miniatures games.

The die is white with half the numbers painted red and the other half green to distinquish between high's and low's. Most of the edges are worn to virtual uselessness. My first D&D rules didn't come with dice, and I don't remember where I bought my first set of polys. I already had a sizable collection of d6s from playing board wargames.

I lost the d10 long ago, but I know exactly where it is. It's in my old bedroom at my Mom's house, it fell off the bed, rolled under the baseboard heating, and down a hole where the pipe for the heat came up through the floor. I should probably rip the floor up sometime, the poor little guy has been sitting down there for 20+ years now, with only a yellow lightsaber from Luke Skywalker (Bespin Outfit) to keep him company... D&D & SW, the stories of my childhood.
Rich, that is a very strangely moving bit of imagery there.

My first set were from the red box.

Same here. After that, my first set of dice (bought around 1983 or so) were a set of bluish translucent dice (remember when ya had to color them with ink or crayons?). I still have them, and still use them actually.

This is the kind of stuff that ends up baffling future archeologists.

Somehow most of my dice were lost when I was away from gaming for an extended period of time. I still have my books and there were a couple of dice with them, but not the collection I used to have. Not sure where they went. I do have one of the 12 sideds where you had to use the white crayon thing to fill in the numbers and I think I have one other still floating around.

I've got a set of the old style (circa 1978) handed down to me from my dad. I don't use them though. I've also got a bunch of random dice that I've picked up over the years. I don't remember buying my first or second set.... I know it was at least 15 years ago, maybe 20 that I bought my first set. I bought my second set about 15 years ago in Nashville.

I have just one small set of dice that I use in every game. I've sorted through my collection and found the best dice to use:
3 d20s (a terrifying amber that rolls 20 a LOT, a reliable blue (rolls 16-18 a lot), and a fairly reliable purple --all are translucent)
1 green d12 (never used ;) )
2 d10 (an orange and a clear, the orange tends to roll high, the clear tends to roll low)
1 red d8 (probably my most reliable die -- rolls 7 and 8 a lot)
1 tiny d6
1 smoky d4 also very reliable, this die was also lost at a park for a week where it was apparently beaten up, scuffed and scratched but not taken by anyone. I found it again the next week when we happened to be gaming at the same area in the park.

I've also got some back-up dice for those unusual circumstances (a pile of d6s and about 6 more purple d10s given to me by another gamer)

I've also got some old style d10s that came in the Marvel supers game (a blue and a red, both worn down now). These are probably the first dice that I purchased myself, at about 12 years old. So, yeah, I remember my first dice, and I've still got them.

I still have my first dice from my Basic box set (whatever year that was), and similar ones that came with Star Frontiers. And yes, I colored the numbers myself with that complementary crayon. They look like funny little lumps of plastic to me compared to my current dice.

excluding the various d6's from Monopoly etc, my first dice were a red d20 numbere 0-9 twice, and 3 translucent d20's numbered 1-20 (it was either 2 yellow and one pink or 2 pink and one yellow ~ i didnt pick them tho, twas the first time i ventured into Games Workshop when i was 9 or 10, i chose a copy of White Dwarf and a blister of Space Marines ~ then whilst mother was paying i noticed the jar of dice on the counter and asked if she could get me some)
