Googling for "Lolth Lloth Loethe" I found this site:
http://www.enhorn.com/kampanjvarlden_eleria/drow.htm

Lolth.

(Lloth, Loethe, Zinserena, Araushnee.

What amuses me is that I don't even know what language that is, yet I can parse it well enough to understand parts of it. :)
It's Swedish and means:
[bq]Lolth
(Lolth, Loethe, Zinserena, Araunshnee. She has many aspects and names), The Spider Goddess, Black Mother of All Spiders. The main goddess of the pantheon and the goddess most Drow worship, and without a doubt the strongest of them. Wants all Drow under her rule and rule over everyone from the Underworld. Tries to ensnare other races into worshipping her under other names and aspects in order to gain more power. "The one who survives, wins."[/bq]

Also, the URL indicates that this is part of the description of the drow in someone's setting.

Kaeyoss,

Uhm no. I do not like Vhaerun that much either. I'd rather a) make all drow LE Banites, Myrkulities or Bhaalites. or b) have them go back to their 1st edition roots BUT follow various Demon Princes. That would make them more unique.

Trick,

Nice work adding in gnolls. I always wanted to make SL gnolls different from regular gnolls. Maybe because I felt the idea of no Yeeguah(sp) or Ethyrnnal(sp) would make for more interested, nature oriented but still savage fighters.

And yes Sethris is pretty contemptible compared to the other Eight, especially the Dark Three. But I'll give her much greater due, since even though she's poked fun of, her spell selections, powers AND Herald is pretty nice. (Also that spear of hers is WAY better than a whip.)

Pychic Warrior,

PLEASE. Lolth could only have wet dreams of how bad ass she could be IF she ever found out about the Slayer. I mean unlike Lolth, Belsameth at least LISTENS to her followers before she starts up a slaughterfest. Plus her intrigue level, way better.

Anyway that's my two cents on some postings.

I call her dead, as my players most efficiently offed her when I ran Q1.

Since then, the drow have crumbled to such a sorry state they are mostly extinct. Mostly they either worship a collosal fiendish spider in a stone age society, worship the Elder Eye in a small insane enclave, or are slaves to the Valorians (Arcana Unearthed).

Poor Eclavdra, her scheme worked far, far too well.

Well - yeah! That's my point! Get rid of the lameness of the Spider Queen by replacing her with something extra cool. I don't like adding gods or demi-gods to SL so each race has to pick from the 'Big Nine' to find a god/goddess they like. I did, however, add Drendari, Goran (as an aspect of Corean) and Katashama.

Don't see how that would make them unique. Or were you comparing them to gnolls?

What's a Belsameth? Or the Slayer, for that matter. What makes it so slay-ish that she deserves a capital S?

It's actually one of the things I rather liked about the Scarred Lands; the settings seemed to be poking deliberate fun at Lolth by making the Spider Goddess for the Scarred Lands pretty much a joke whose status doesn't rate much higher than "angry social outcast."

Yeah. Making fun of deities was always a strong point for me when selecting campaign worlds. :P

No, thanks. If I want stuff being made fun of, I play Discworld.

In FR it's also written Lolth, dunno how that double-L got sneaked in there.

Thanee

As far as I know, Salvatore made a typo, stuck to it, and so did Cunningham. Later, they made it an official spelling by saying "some drow call her Lloth instead of Lolth". I suspect the Tempos/Tempus thing was the same, considering that the barbarians from Icewind Dale use the deviant spelling.

And btw: Today, I read in this a novel: "She prayed to Ilmater, goddess of suffering". Aside from being a masochist, Ilmater's a gender bender, too. ;)

Wait, I'm confused. Ilmater's always been female...

He has...? Could have sworn he was a he more often than not.

But then again, being a God does present an advantage of not having a set form. ;)

Ah, I see the confusion. I'm thinking of "Ilmatar" from Finnish Myth, who is a goddess. But then, I should have realized, since Ilmatar has nothing to do with suffering, IIRC.

I don't actually mind fantasy settings drawing on real-world myth, but I do wish they'd not change things in the process. ;)
