Your top 5 sci-fi movies (and why)

I gather we're ignoring the 50's here? There's some that (though they've mostly disappeared into the rear view mirror at that point) were considered kind of important earlier.
i was just trying to stay close to Star Wars decade previous, but yeah.

I didn't mention Omega Man or Silent Running for 70s, but yeah there were several big movies in the 50s.
  • The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951
  • The Thing from Another World (1951)
  • War of the Worlds (1953)
  • Forbidden Planet (1956)
  • Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)
If you like The Terminator movie, you might check out "Cyborg 2087" from 1966, low budget movie with a very similar concept.

I would also suggest to people to seek out and watch:
  • Ikarie XB 1 (1963)
  • The Aerial (2007)

I’m not saying top 5 buuuut if this movie doesn’t scream sci-fi and D&D I don’t know what does? (Fontana, the river rat is my kinda PC)

Has Tasha Yar in it...

Makes it a must see movie just for that (though the movie itself doesn't exactly scream...top 5...).

I put Forbidden Planet in my number 1 slot, but aside from that other 50s films failed to make my top 5, influential as they were. I prefer the original Thing from Another World to John Carpenter's remake. I'm fond of Quatermass, but as those movies were remakes of a TV show I would probably class them under TV. Also, they run over into the 60s. Not keen on The Day the Earth Stood Still - too much wishful thinking, aliens are not going to come and save us.
