It didn't matter if the architect showed Neo that Trinity was in danger or not.

Trinity, as a member of Zion is doomed if he went through the other door and went with the destruction of Zion and reboot.

But by rebooting, Neo could choose 23 humans to live and restart Zion. Trinity could have been among those chosen. But by showing that she was dying even before the reboot, the Architect allowed Neo to choose the "wrong" door. He actually gave Neo a strong reason to choose the wrong door. It looked like he specifically set up a situation, and then showed the situation to Neo, expressly to make Neo choose the wrong door.

Again, my point is that if the Architect had not shown Trinity's predicament to Neo, Neo would have fulfilled his purpose to the Matrix.

In two watchings of the movie, it really looks to me that everything was set up for Neo to choose Trinity over humanity. But every *said* sounded like the opposite.

That's why I'm not understanding the ending. If the Architect wanted Neo to choose reloading, why give The One such a compelling reason to choose otherwise? If the Architect didn't want Neo to choose reloading, everything he said in the movie is a lie.

I actually agree with most of your points but allow me to offer a potential clarification. The Architect doesn't understand humanity, drive or emotion at all. It may come close to understand behavior and survival instincts but one of the classic man vs. machine conflicts is machine's inability to overcome the human spirit. I still contend that the Matrix films are still about that basic (and time honored) stuggle, just with a few twists in there. Honestly, I don't think they have done the best job at it, but the conflict is still there...

Except my understanding of the Architech speech lead me to believe the 23 are chosen from within the Matrix, Zion has to be destroyed. Zion is created just to root out those that choose to not believe the Matrix. I believe this is the choice that had to be allowed so that the Matrix could work.

I'm thinking the Oracle wanted Neo not to choose the reloading, but the Architect believed this One would be just like every other and could not conceive of Neo choosing any other way.
