Zombies and Crooks (DM:Mal Malenkirk Judge: Covaithe )

[sblock=mal]Can I use the same skill twice? If so, I'll make another history roll, otherwise I'll attempt to aid Jarel-Karn with something else. [/sblock]

[sblock=OOC]Sure, you can use the same skill twice.

Religion (1d20+12=18)

2 success, 0 failure

The Usurper is clearly an ancient entity, probaby a god, who tried to overthrow the pantheon and rule over the universe. He was defeated and exiled beyond light and memory but has always had a mad cult of dedicated followers trying to free him.

There is a reference to 'The Dark General', the right hand man of 'The Usurper'. He was a powerful archangel cast down with his master. You have reasons to believe that Rinch might be a spark of the soul this General.

He must have found a foothole in this world, there must be some physical manifestation of his soul somewhere near Daunton, akin to a lich phylactery. Death does not weaken him; he is tied to this city by this shard of his soul and each time he crosses the veil between worlds he becomes stronger.

It is probable that this 'Heart of Darkness' was also a link to the eternal soul of either the General or the Usurper, to continue this process of bringing them into the world.

The problem is that you have no clue where the initial shard of the General's soul is hidden and scouring the city is not practical. But you are zoning in on a ritual that has the potential to disrupt the reincarnation ritual. It wouldn't kill Rinch for good but if performed after a 'death', it could fray the link between rinch and that particular shard, shutting him out from Daunton for a while. Months, maybe years.

Hrmm, Rinch had to have used that warehouse for a reason, I wonder if this heart could be there, or some clue to it's location?

[sblock=ooc]Okay, history check.
History, DC 15 (1d20+8=27)

Really, this is my only useful skill. But I am tempted to ask for an athletics check to search the entire warehouse :)

Rinch and his lives are tied to me somehow. If the Ursurper tried to overthrow the Gods, then in a past life, I may have become linked to him somehow. The deva tries to recall weaknesses about the Ursurper in relation to his battles with the Gods that may reveal parts of the ritual needed to keep Rinch from reincarnating.

"That ritual reminds me something..." tells Jarel-karn. His years of fighting undead of the Valley of Bone have left him with a few knowledge about such creatures.

[SBLOCK=OOC]We have 4 success it seems, and no failure, so, just for the fun of it, let's see if there isn't something Arcane related to all that: Arcana check (1d20+10=25). Might even be a fifth success...[/SBLOCK]

Hrmm, Rinch had to have used that warehouse for a reason, I wonder if this heart could be there, or some clue to it's location?

[sblock=OOC]Well, we know the 'Heart of Darkness' is there and that Rinch tried to retrieve it.

But he died without telling what he knew. You don't know what the heart looks like and from what ship it was seized or when.

Right now it is exactly like the Lost Ark from Indiana Jones, lost in a huge government warehouse. Needle in a haystack.[/sblock]

It seems obvious that whatever his orginal nature, the Usurper is now tied to the shadow realms.

You discover not one but two rituals that show promises.

First, the ritual of Radiant Severance. If performed over a recently diseased body it will cut the ties between a sould and its earthly anchor. Montroya learns the ritual.

You discover another interesting rituals; Purging the soul.

It turns out that by fighting Rinch, your body has been tainted by his shadowy energy. It's nothing serious, you would get cleaned up naturally within the week. But you can use it to your advantage; The ritual 'Purging the Soul' cleans up all this taint and then attune you to its particular signature; when you face Rinch again, you will be stronger.

[sblock=OOC]'recently diseased' translate to 'Must start Within 2 rounds'. So the one to perform the ritual must be within three moves of him at the point of death.

Radiant Severance

Duration: One minute
Key Skill: Religion

5 + Disrupted for a month
15+ Disrupted for 6 month
25+ Disrupted for a year
35+ permanent (The item used to link the soul to the world becomes useless)

This doesn't work on a Lich. It works specifically only on creatures with a [Shadow] descriptor that reincarnate freely by using a physical anchor.

Purging the Soul

Key skill : Religion (no check)
Duration : one hour

Effect; you purge the trace taint that your body endured during your last confrontation with the Usurper's minions and transform it into positive energy that will harm him.

To work, you need to have been exposed to one of the Usurper's minion energy and then fight him again within the week.

Then, whenever an attack includes that minion (Rinch), all attack rolls and damage gains a +2 enhancement bonus (Remember that if you are using a +1 weapon/implement, the attack already has a +1 enhancement bonus and it does not stack).

These are so specific that I won't try coming up with a level and a market price.

You likely will never have to uses these again (And by the time you have +2 weapons/implements you won't care about Purging the Soul anayway even if you find yourself in the same situation)

[sblock=OOC]More later. But the next step is obviously tracking down Rinch again now that you know how to spot him (at least for a while)

Montroya looks up from the book he's been studying. "I have discovered a pair rituals that will help us on our mission. But first we must find the Heart of Darkness. Apoli's strength is the light of the sun. If we can find a point of Apoli's weakness, where an artifact of such nature can be strong, we shall find what we seek."

[sblock=OOC]Yes, the second ritual apply to everyone.

I have been a bit busy today, should update tomorrow.

That approach Montroya suggested to find the heart of darkness ain't half bad. It's not directly relevant to the next step of the adventure (That would be finding Rinch, which I don't intend to make difficult!) but I'll integrate it.

[sblock=ooc]Did we complete the skill challenge? I only counted 5 successes, but I may have missed one.
I'll be online in about 15 hours from now, if there's an update I'll post soon.

Also, while the best possible outcome is to banish Rinch forever, It would be pretty cool (IMO) to banish him for a year, and have to come back together, once a year on the same day, to perform the ritual to keep the terrible thing at bay. Very secret-order stuff. Would make for a good story, one I will certainly steal for an adventure in another campaign sometime.[/sblock]
