The
Forgotten Realms is the default
campaign setting for most D&D 5th Edition adventures. The setting was created by
Ed Greenwood in the late 1960s, and published in D&D by
TSR in 1987. The setting has spanned every edition of the game since AD&D 1st Edition.

Geography
The planet is called Abeir-Toril, and the continent of Faerûn (fey-roon) is the setting for much of the content, especially the Sword Coast. There are additional continents, including Kara-Tur (eastern-themed, setting of
Oriental Adventures), Zakhara (arabian, setting of
Al-Qadim), Maztica (mesoamerican), and Anchorome; plus the Underdark, home of the drow, mind flayers, and other subterranean races.
Language
A variety of languages are spoken in the Forgotten Realms. These languages are the foundation for songs, poems, spells, and writings.
Sword Coast
The Sword Coast, an region of Faerûn, is the setting for many D&D 5E adventures. It includes the cities of
Baldur's Gate,
Neverwinter, Candlekeep, and
Waterdeep. It is named after the Sea of Swords, which it lies alongside.
