    Enworld's Grognards

Empires in Arms is by far my favorite, although I own half a dozen other bookcase games. That old War of the Ring game from ?SSI? is a serious classic. My older bro and I used to play it a ton back in the day. . . . ah, the memories. And for some strange reason, we always listened to an...

    Help me lose weight

Don't snack - eat only at mealtimes. Our bodies were not designed to need that much food. Plus, try changing the amount of walking to 3-4 miles per DAY.

What the heck am I doing??!?!

Sold everything and went to Kazakhstan, former Soviet central Asia. Stayed 5 years. You'll be fine.

    Moving to Charleston, SC

I greatly appreciate all of your help. Once we get settled, I will certainly check out the places you recommeded. In fact, the Green Dragon looks like it is but 5 minutes from my new place of work. Thanks!

    Moving to Charleston, SC

ENWorlders all, After 5 years in Central Asia and 2 in Bloomington, Indiana getting an MBA, I am now moving to Charleston, SC to start work. Our second son is due in May, and we will be making the geographic shift as a family of four in early June. I'd love to learn about gaming circles...

    I got an RPG job!

That is cool news! And as for editing, that is the one thing that RPG companies really need nowadays. Make us proud!

What is your favorite chromatic dragon?

I voted green. Sure, they are all awesome, and all play a part, but IMC I made the breath weapon gas killer as usual but it left a powdery green residue that acted as a fertilizer.

    Profit warning hits Games Workshop

Just trying to get a grasp of the industry and GW's relative strategy within it. Using ye olde Porter's "five forces" model for corporate strategy, alternative products are a major factor that must be considered. Why are they successful when there are so many attractive competetors/alternative...

    Profit warning hits Games Workshop

OK, "dead wrong" or not, are there any viable alternatives to GW's products out there? I am not too familiar with this part of the gaming universe, so I am not sure what else there is. Someone is still buying, and apparently buying a lot, even at those wacko prices. Of course, lowering...

    SVGames disconinuing ESDs!

This caught me by surprise, too. It can't be that expensive to maintain; it adds little fixed cost to their normal operations. Maybe it was a support issue, like too many complaints or requests for assistance or something like that.

    Profit warning hits Games Workshop

Their marketing may sound like it is straight from Satan, but let's not forget that they are a public company, so therefore their goals are to enrich shareholders first and foremost. Attracting new gamers regularly at that age is far more important than stroking the feelings of 10+ year fans...

    Profit warning hits Games Workshop

Overreaction in the markets, it seems. I am buying a few shares - it is a real cash generator, with a decend dividend payout ratio. They just had some very optimistic goals and didn't meet them. Performance otherwise is quite good. I agree with the statement that the depreciating dollar is...

    When PCs go "Swiss"

This is a player problem, and I would approach it as such. Often times player John just doesn't like ceding control of a game to Joe-behind-the-cardboard, and James has deep-seeded problems with Carl and Mike's percieved lack of respect for him. Then there is Kristin, who just wants to be...

    long distance move rates?

The real benefit with long-distance travelling with horses (or mules, donkeys, tauntauns, whatever) is not speed or comfort but carrying capacity. With minimal effort, mounts can be used to carry necessary supplies over long distances without encumbering their owners.

D+D in your language (new words, post #23)

To expand on Mr. Semlak's, for dungeon we often used "podzemlyeniye," which roughly translates into "underground place." I suppose that the lack of a good word for "dungeon" might be due to the lack of a tendency to imprison in the middle ages in Russia rather than just roughly dismembering...

    Famous people who play D&D.

Actually, I would be surprised if Gates ever played anything of the sort; I don't think it fits his style. Escaping reality is not what I see as a drive for him. In fact, he is probably too obsorbed with reality to make that necessary leap (the one we all enjoy so much!) into an RPG game.

    Player Tryouts

I would make sure that the players had just as much say as you do. It's their game, too! But contraty to what has been written previously, make sure you and yours think that the prospect fits your game and concentrate less on vice-versa. We have had the problem twice in the past of...

Another RPG company with financial difficulties

Substitutes have hacked the traditional RPG market. Many have pointed out the size of the market and the reasons why it is not growing (lack of new players!) but IMHO the reason it is attracting far fewer new players than in the past is definitely due to substitute products - and here I mean...

Looking for a Map Drawing Tool

Since I am not as savvy as the average ENWorlder and not up on the tools that are out and about on the web, I thought I'd ask y'all. I am looking for an electronic tool that would help me draw dungeons (my own plans, not designed for me.) I'd love to be able to recreate the old blue background...
