    HACKMASTER Basic - for free!

the feedback we get constantly is despite all the 'added' elements, it still plays faster than the other popular games. it reads more complicated than it plays (while there's a lot going on, it's intuitive and after two sessions, combat speeds to levels seen only by diceless gamers)

The necessity of an introductory adventure with a new RPG

We included three in the free PDF of HackMaster we released today*. The logic was that people need to be able to break it open and play with as little effort as possible. Also, everyone likes free stuff, so including an adventure is nice. *Kenzer & Company

[Hackmaster] To anyone who's ever been slightly interested in trying this game out...

note also, if you really hate opponents with shields, there are several weapons in the new PHB designed or at least better equipped to smash them.

[Hackmaster] To anyone who's ever been slightly interested in trying this game out...

Yeah, that can happen once in a while when you don't use the fatigue rules or morale rules. but generally not against orcs -- orcs have a +2 to damage bonus and a small shield absorbs 4/medium 6. Generally, the party fighter might have a +2 DMG from specialization, +2 DMG from strength and...

[Hackmaster] To anyone who's ever been slightly interested in trying this game out...

Since the game is free-form where a player *can* take an action any second (but does not *have* to), I can see why you might think that. However, if you were to play even for 30 minutes, you'd quickly realize that combat goes faster and more smoothly than expected. A bonus is no soda break for...

Hackmaster won an ORIGINS award in 2001

both classics. I can't believe they still allow us in. Dave PS I don't care how much you love the rifleman, I still say you should never have went to town with that winchester when we won for A&8s.

    Hackmaster

The reason shooting and movement don't need to be tracked separately, like they are in A&8s, is because no actions in HMb take less than one second...unlike in the western genre when you can empty your colt in 3 seconds flat (or less). See also gatling guns. ;)

Dragon Appreciation: Which are your favorite Dragon comic series?

I voted for Fin as well. It looks like the newer stuff is getting more attention. I guess that makes sense as the demographics changed with 2e and then 3e taking center stage. I was a 1e guy, so Fin was it for me. KoDT's hanging in there pretty well for being out for about a decade.

Wizards of the Coast/Kenzer & Company License Agreements Expiring

we have no current plans to use chips or cards in HM. the obvious ports are the skills, Qs & Fs, some character creation streamlining, the modular rules design (i.e., advanced and basic rules that fit together) and so on.

Wizards of the Coast/Kenzer & Company License Agreements Expiring

That is correct, sir. :obligatory echo of what Jolly said above: Thanks for all the praise. Kalamar did well prior to the D&D license. Kalamar did well under the D&D license. Kalamar will do well post D&D license. It has long been my belief that settings with a "schtick" are only played...
