D&D 5E How to Think About 6-8 Encounters Per Day

Well by and large, the idle or standard 'resting' times are the standard 1 hour short - 8 hour long. This is the base line that players can always assume and plan for. I make sure the player's know and understand, even if it required a little Out of Game game-theory discussion of Adventuring Day...

D&D 5E Changing Rests Based on Story Elements?

I actually just posted on another thread about this topic about 10 minutes before the OP made this thread. :) I've been doing this in my game and it works great. I'll quote what I said over there...

D&D 5E How to Think About 6-8 Encounters Per Day

The Adventuring Day and it's supposed 6 -8 encounters per is something I've been thinking about a bit too. One big question I ask myself is, what actually is an Adventuring DAY? Is that an actual In Game 24 hours (or whatever time period your game world uses)? Not all adventures and quests are...

D&D 5E Anyone Using the Optional Initiative from the DMG?

Not the one in the DMG, but a variant I was thinking of using was the 'lowest to highest initiative in order describe what they do. Resolve actions highest to lowest initiative." But I'm torn because like Agamon, if it makes combat too long, I'll skip it.

    D&D 5E Who can use a scroll

It may be a bit less confusing if you rebrand the 'universal' scrolls into magical charms or other such items. Scroll of Protection could easily become a small vial of magic iron dust you sprinkle over your shoulder for example.

    D&D 5E Riddle Me This

Straight up real-world puzzles and riddles I avoid. But in game 'physical' puzzles ala Metroid, and Legend of Zelda I am a fan of.

D&D 5E How does Surprise work in 5e?

The way I would handle a situation like this is by first comparing the stealth checks vs passive wisdom. Assuming all archers remain unnoticed, I would make attack rolls (with advantage) for the archers and explain to the characters that a number of arrows fly from an unseen assailant. Basically...

[NC, Knightdale/Zebulon/Wilson] New to Area: Seeking Game

Hey guys. I'm newish to the area too (moved about 15 months ago from Upstate NY). Not a vet. But with 5e recently out I've had a hankering to play some D&D. I live over in Chapel Hill so it would be kind of a trip to get out to Knightdale/Zebulon but I could make it to Cary! I've always been the...

Oh, magical armor and weapons don't require attunement.

D&D 5E Camping is dangerous (how can it be made safer?)

In regards to the Sleeping in Armor question, I've ruled in past editions that characters who have sets of heavy armor (and some medium armors) could sleep in parts of their armor which gives them a 'free' set of lighter armor so that they are not completely caught with their pants down if...

    D&D 5E D&D 5e death and consequences?

The spell also gives a new meaning to the wedding tradition of giving a wife a diamond ring. The 'husband' goes off to war/adventure/explore, the 'wife' has a diamond on to use for resurrection if needed. I put husband and wife in quotes cause, well it's 2014 and D&D... doesn't necessarily have...

D&D 5E If party short rests in a dungeon room

Yeah basically I would envision characters getting pretty cozy for an hour to have a short rest. Cozy enough were if the characters weren't in an area that was adequately cleared out and known to be non hostile it would be just too tense to get much rest. If there was a place that seemed like a...

D&D 5E If party short rests in a dungeon room

Aside from the random encounters others have mentioned, I would personally rule that trying to rest in an unknown and dangerous place for a full hour would be too stressful and nerve-racking to allow the characters to get any peace from sitting down to eat, drink and tend to wounds unless there...

I dunno... seems the same to me. That's why NASCAR and Hockey are so popular, right? :heh:

Gliese 581g - A Tidally Locked DnD World

Wouldn't all the water be frozen on the dark side since it would be extremely cold, never receiving any solar energy? The water vapor would move across from the hot side to the cold, condense, and then eventually freeze generating a huge half-world sized glacier.

It's Almost the Season for WOTC layoff!

What's the difference about talking about it now before it may or may not happen. Or like every other previous time when it happened and we all gather round like gitty school girls gossiping about it?

    An Older Experience System

I think it's a great idea. I've experienced it first hand and it works well too, as the recent Barbarians of Lemuria game uses this setup in a way.

What does your ultimate gaming table look like?

It wouldn't really be a table per se. If money were no barrier, my ultimate gaming table would be a room. It would be a holodeck.
