Great Fantasy Cities (and what makes them so awesome)

Firstly I've gotta second Lankhmar, Ankh-Morpork, and Sanctuary. To me, superheroics is a sort of subgenre of both science fiction (Iron Man, Hulk, Superman) and Fantasy (Thor, DR. Strange, The Spectre). As such, tow of my favorite cities are Gotham City and Marvel New York. Gotham City...

What are the tools for Home Brewing a World?

Quite honestly what I've found useful is the 1e Deties & Demigods cyclopedia. Not so much for the stats because they're really only useful for one version of the game and one style of play (deities are super duper monsters that will probably roast PCs alive, but they are just barely beatable)...

    TSR Q&A with Gary Gygax

Assassins & Paladins Hey Gary, I would be much delighted if you would tell me what you think of this entry from my blog: http://greybeardsngrognards.blogspot.com/2007/11/greybeards-grognards-3-assassins.html If you don't feel you have time to read the whole thing, I can summarize it thusly...

Greybeards & Grognards 3: Assassins, Paladins, and Party Harmony

The point I was trying to make wasn't that a party would want to hire specifically evil mercenaries, but a party might not particularly care whether mercenaries they hire are evil or not, unless it contains a paladin who refuses to adventure with evil characters.

Greybeards & Grognards 3: Assassins, Paladins, and Party Harmony

An x-post from my blog Greybeards & Grognards 3: Assassins, Paladins, Image Problems, and Party Harmony! Oh My! I mentioned before that the assassin class was dumped in the 1e to 2e switch because of image problems and party harmony issues. I promised that there was an essay in there...

Keep on the Borderlands - your experiences?

I tried to run it once converted up to AD&D 2e rules because that's the system I knew best. It worked okay, but the only one of the encounters from the book that got run was the Mad Hermit one. The players didn't seem to be getting that he was a mad hermit and that he would only lie and try to...

    Greybeards & Grognards 1

Done! You know since these are slang terms/ in-jokes/ gamer jargon, isn't popular usage the only method to arrive at a definition?

I miss Dual Classing and the power of nostalgia

Okay, he's not a living god. Not sure I can go with that because I'm an animist, so me, you, Gygax, and my two cats, are all living gods to me. But using the term in the largely figurative sense that you probably meant it, I will concede. But let me ask you this: Whose word would you take on...

I miss Dual Classing and the power of nostalgia

Dual Classing My first real attempt to use the old dual-classing rules was in the construction of an NPC for a 1e campaign. My world's version of the Grandfather of Assassins. A 15h level Assassin/ 29th level fighter/ 30th level Magic-User. This was less than five years ago, and it still...

    Greybeards & Grognards 1

I did take one suggestion from this thread and started a blog using the Greybeards & Grognards title. There is a much revised version of the initial post of this thread there.

    Why Worldbuilding is Bad

    1) Alright, that is a good point. 2) It's not usually the way I operate, but there probably is more sense in this approach. You might dig this: Castle Granite [This is the introductory text I've written to an adventure that I've started writing but haven't tried to run yet. The bracketed...

    Why Worldbuilding is Bad

I like to go to the forums at Campaign Builder's Guild with others that like to spend a lot of time on world-building. They have contests to see who can design the best whatever. This month, the chosen subject is taverns. I had a good idea, so I wrote this up: Physical description: The...

    Homebrew worlds and "borrowing"...

In my homebrew world, there are definite strains of borrowing, stealing, and mild influence. One odd thing is that I incorporate monsters published in so many eras of D&D, things I think of as generic D&D monsters (Norkers) have become attached to one current world (Greyhawk). Some things...

    Why Worldbuilding is Bad

I will agree with your definition, but I will disagree with your conclusion. Like I said before: I've been working with the same homebrew world, since seventh grade. I think that might be equivalent to a few thousand pages of text. I have retconned out much of the stuff from the earliest...

    Why Worldbuilding is Bad

I've been working on one world since middle school. I've discarded pages upon pages of notes on NPCs, history and geography, but certain elements have remained consistent throughout. I think that makes me a better DM not a worse DM. At some point, if there are enough adventures there, a...

Why are hit points generated randomly?

I find your views intriguing and wish to subscribe to your newsletter. Sadly, I actually kind of like this idea. Dang! I just realized something. I actually am kind of working on this. I've been designing a homebrew RPG rules system from the ground up since about high school, and one of its...

Why are hit points generated randomly?

I've usually been the DM because I'm usually the one who owns rulebooks, since about sixth or seventh grade. I did once see a player roll up a character with one hit point at first level, since that PC's quick demise, I've been experimenting with ways to be more friendly at first level. I...

Who Else Thinks This Chick is Hot?

She's not bad for a drawing, but there are better ones out there. Like Betty & Veronica for starters.
