I read through all of Fleming's Bond books and liked them. Then I read one Bond book but another author, I forget who, and really didn't like it. I never tried another Bond book since then.

Legend
Fleming, of course. Though the last couple are rather poor.

I've read two of the others: "Devil May Care" by Faulks and "Solo" by Boyd. They make for an interesting contrast:

Faulks was very definitely writing "as Ian Fleming", and for about two-thirds of his novel he actually pulls it off pretty well. Sadly, the last thing falls to pieces, becoming a bad parody of a Roger Moore-era Bond film rather than a new Bond novel. A shame.

By contrast, Boyd wrote a novel is (I presume) his own style that happened to have Bond as the protagonist. Which is fine, and makes his work the better of the two when judged as a novel. It's just a William Boyd novel, rather than a "James Bond novel".

I'm rather looking forward to Horowitz's forthcoming "Trigger Mortis". But I have no interest in hunting down any of the other Bond novels, or the Young Bond series.
