D&D 4E Who else is going to be a deserter when 4e comes out?

Ask me if I care about any Storyteller product or their fanbase wanting editions after editions of new core rulebook.
Wow, you are on a roll. This really reaches new heights of ludicrosity. The fact that something happens to someone doesn't mean they wanted it. White Wolf fans don't appreciate frequent turnover any more than you do, and on another message board somewhere, someone is swearing that they won't buy Exalted 2E. They are probably also making cute little memes like "$toryteller". You may not like the system but recognize the buyers are human beings and their woes are your woes.

If 4e comes before 2010, I will retire my RPG hobby without hesitation and sell/give away all my games. The videogame (or TCG) mentality have taken over the RPG industry. Sooner or later, we may see new editions of D&D coming every year, reaching two digits before 2020 ("D&D 14.0e").
!
Despite WotC being the 4^10 lb gorilla in the market, the RPG industy is more than them. & the RPG hobby is much more. Your books don't break when a new edition comes out. You can still play 3e after 4e comes out just as I am still playing classic Traveller & Kaboom! today.

Another thought that I just had. People shouldn't be against more versions of games coming out, because it allows for people to find a version they really like. The more out there, the more options.
I'd be 100% in agreement with you if it weren't for the fact that my ability to play many out-of-print games is hampered by the rules being hard to find & illegal to copy.

(Although, the situation is generally better today than it was in the past. More games under an open-license or with gratis, usable "light" versions. More once-out-of-print games either back in print or available in PDF.)

While I have no need or immediate desire to see 4th edition any time soon, I am sure that once it comes along I will definitely get it.

I’ve played OD&D, 1st Ed, 2nd Ed, 3.0 and 3.5… Can’t see myself NOT getting 4th edition.

Only if they care about D&D and how WotC keep doling out new versions. Based on my encounters with them, I got the strong feeling that most of them don't give a rip about D&D. As much as I sympathize with their customers' woes, I'm really and truly not interested in White Wolf and their Storyteller System products, okay? The only time I'll ever be interested in White Wolf is their operation as a d20 publishinghouse for Sword & Sorcery Studio and most recently Guardians of Order's A Game of Throne RPG.

Now, if WotC thinks that White Wolf's model of doling out new versions more frequently seems like a good idea, then I suggest WotC to stop using that damn model.

Dude, if you continue to have that high level of enthusiasm well into your 90's, I can only envy you.

But you're not me and I'm not you. Trust me, I do not like having the tired, jaded feeling I have now.

I may not have the most reasonable or the most plausible answer to retire my RPG hobby, but when that day come I will have to make that decision, and that may based on what's best for my own life.

Also very sneaky comparison to video games in your post, although completely irrelevant, owing to video games things that are in no way unique to them- much like every other comparison between video games and 3E out there.

If I may have a moment of unmitigated ego:

Ever since the inception of 3e, some of the more negative suggestions have included the judgement that the game has become too much "like a videogame." Usually used in a rather dismissive way, to imply that the game isn't true role-playing anymore, and has degenerated from an ancient purity, this view echoed the sentiment that the game had lost imagination, that it had sold out, that it was built more for computer emulation than for playing at the table with friends.

Despite what the chicken littles cry, D&D is far, far from a videogame. It tries to use dice to emulate an artificial reality, rather than tell a story (which it leaves up to individual DM's). Videogames use computers to try and tell a story (they leave the button-pushing to individual players).

Three quick observations: I find it kind of funny that these kind of threads are often started by folks like Turanil, who don't actually play D&D any longer. Nothing wrong with that, mind you, I just find it interesting.

As a man who's about to turn 37 in a few days time, I can tell you my desire to play D&D is getting stronger, not weaker. Some of my players are in their 40s and share a desire that, if we had more free time, we'd play more often. Ranger REG has his experience, we have ours. Scorch has mentioned to me more than once that he expects we'll be in the retirement home, playing RPGs, video games and board games 16 hours a day. :)

My general experience with folks who claim that 3e is like a video-game are folks who usually haven't played video games very recently or don't much like them to begin with. Frankly, having D&D compared to the likes of Half-Life 2, Halo 2, Pirates, God of War, Final Fantasy or other games isn't an insult in my book. Especially since many video games (even ones like Burnout 3) owe a direct or indirect legacy to D&D, anyways. Calling D&D like a video game is like saying the comic adaption of the Spiderman 2 movie was like a comic book.
