More cool 4E moments.

Hey all…
The thread with the “You shall not pass!” cleric move got me thinking about the cool things my players have done since 4E has come out. Unfortunately, it’s a rather short list.

Kobold Hall
Area 3 – Skull Skull!
The rogue scouts a little bit ahead of the other two party members and stealthily peeks around the corner to see a bunch of kobolds swinging a rock over a few coffins. He says the next time the rock comes across the nearest (bottom left) coffin he’s jumping up and grabbing the rope. It eventually does, and he spends his surprise round on an Acrobatic trick to grab the rope and swing to the open space on the top right platform. He then wins initiative and attempts to Positioning Strike the Kobold Slinger off the ledge. This doesn’t quite work, because he instead crits and kills the slinger outright! He then Action Points and Sly Flourishes the minion that’s in front of him. So before anyone else has even had a chance to act, he’s swung over a pit of goop, and killed two enemies in dramatic fashion. What makes this especially cool was that this was our first 4E “adventure” and this particular player was the most resistant about making the switch to 4E.

Keep on the Shadowfell
Area 12 – Hobgoblin Guard Room
Again, the rogue showed off his trickiness in this encounter. The PCs entered the room, and gave the false password. The Hobgoblins sounded the alarm and one of the hobgoblins (the rightmost one) started heading out to warn Kalarel. He moved his 5 squares and got to the corner of the eastern hallway. I believe the paladin ran ahead to cut off the escape. The rogue then moves out and flanks the hobgoblin, and scores a crit with Positioning Strike. He is an Artful Dodger with 18 Charisma, which lets him slide the hobgoblin 4 squares. This happens to be the exact distance to the well. The hobgoblin fails his saving throw and falls down the well, taking enough damage to kill him. So a level 2 technically one-shotted a level 3 Soldier.

And that’s about it… We’ve only run those two adventures so far, having just finished KotS last weekend. Although I bought Thunderspire Labrynth, these modules are so bad we're skipping it and I'll be homebrewing from here on out, so there will be more opportunity for "cool stuff".

My group had another cool moment that utilized the well in the hobgoblin guard room. We went down the hallway into the water filled room where we unfortunately ambushed by a massive Blue Ooze. Barely managing to shake off it's stunning influence, the team backtracked down the hallway, kiting the ooze along with magic missiles and other random blasts. Two of us hid in the corners just past the doorway, while the others drew it's attention from across the room.

And that's when my Dragonborn Fighter pulled out one of my favorite manuevers - Tide of Iron. Two rounds later, after a spent action point and an unsucessful save on the part of the ooze, I had shoved it over the edge into the well, where we seemed to be safely out of it's reach. Before it could climb back up the sides of the pit, we blasted it into mush.

What is bad about the modules?

Can't talk about Thunderspire Labyrinth, but I successfully refluffed Keep on the Shadowfell and my players are very happy about it.

I mean, the adventure as written is a bit low on story and it feels a bit rail-roady at times, but since the encounter areas are all fine, it was just a matter of adding some plot and seasoning it to taste.

Now, for cool moments...

Area 4 of Keep on the Shadowfell, the players enter through the secret door, however they fail to surprise Balgron the Fat, who jumps out the curtain and yells for the guards... So much for the surprise round

Then the Cleric, in a stroke of genius, runs to the double doors and bars them, while the rest of the party kills the goblin warrior and corners Balgron.
The rest of the Goblins start to batter down the doors and the party assumes ambush positions while the dragonborn infernal warlock starts to interrogate Balgron. The wizard readies an action to cast a spell as soon as the doors break and casts Grasping Shadows, killing two minions and severely damaging two goblin warriors. The Human Paladin is also in the area of effect, but the wizard misses his attack against him. The Paladin then dispatches one of the other Goblins, while the Cleric lasers the other one. Then the two warlocks teleport using Ethereal Stride to the other side of the bottleneck and start cursing and blasting the remaining goblins, killing two minions. The Wizard magic missiles another goblin and the paladin gets into the middle of the remaining goblins and uses Valiant Strike to great effect.

A couple of rounds later, they were interrogating the goblin about the enemies plans (I am using a different plot and BBEG)...

In that particular encounter, I don't think anybody rolled below 10.
We all had a blast.
