When my current 4e campaign that I'm running ends, I'm going to run a 2e campaign using the 1e DMG, like I did back in the day. I really enjoyed 2e, even with its power creep.
2e focused more on storytelling and roleplaying rather than all the cool powers in later editions. Still, you could do a good old fashioned dungeon crawl.
At mid-levels (6-10), however, I noticed that something strange often happened. Characters were too powerful for a lot of the standard monsters of comparative HD, yet too weak for monsters that were only a HD or two higher. Of course, with 3e, we got the idea of monster advancement--so if that's used it shouldn't be much of a problem.
