How is 2nd Edition?

When my current 4e campaign that I'm running ends, I'm going to run a 2e campaign using the 1e DMG, like I did back in the day. I really enjoyed 2e, even with its power creep.

2e focused more on storytelling and roleplaying rather than all the cool powers in later editions. Still, you could do a good old fashioned dungeon crawl.

At mid-levels (6-10), however, I noticed that something strange often happened. Characters were too powerful for a lot of the standard monsters of comparative HD, yet too weak for monsters that were only a HD or two higher. Of course, with 3e, we got the idea of monster advancement--so if that's used it shouldn't be much of a problem.

Second edition is a good game. Where it suffers most rules-wise is in a few redesign issues that are sub par (rangers and bards, initial druid spell spheres) compared to 1st edition and uneven kits in the sprawling Complete Book series. I would certainly recommend the Complete Fighter's Handbook and the Complete Bard's Handbook because the former provides good combat skill options and the latter helps fix the weak bard class.

Overall, aside from the couple glitches I mentioned, the rules are pretty solid. The DMG, on the other hand, was nowhere near as helpful as the 1st edition DMG. But that's less a question of rules and more a question of paucity of material.

Second edition and it's later kit structure shines quite well in the Al-Qadim setting. Look into it and you won't be disappointed.

Oh yes, I think 2e is also easier to teach new players D&D or even RPGs. In fact, one class is perfect for the newbie to play to get the basic rules down: The Fighter. :)

Wow, I always considered Al Qadim as perhaps one of the best settings in 2E.

Note that the poster you are responding to lives in Saudi Arabia. I do not doubt that the Western stereotyping and commercialization of Arabian legend is offensive to some.

[Edit: I see that he (or she) responded to clarify his (or her) own position before I posted my own reply to you.]

Is all stereotype and offend to arab people. Western view of Arab make us look like murder fighter.

Uh.

Wow.

By that logic, all Western people depicted in Dungeons and Dragons are murderous thieves.

Same with Asian people (Kara-Tur)

Maybe this game isn't for you.

No. Characters not just murderour theives in handbook. In Al Qadim, they make my culture bad.

I see from you location that you're from Saudia Arabia, so I can appreciate your distinct view of the setting. And I would not have the audacity to tell you your wrong, coming from a western point of view I wouldn't know. However, just a friendly piece of advice (I'm not a mod or anything): politics and the like are really not good subjects for discussion here, so you may wish to pull back a touch.
