Parrying Dagger Question

You can enchant a Spiked Shield as a weapon or as a shield, not both. So technically, you can have a +2 Flaming Spiked Shield.

Well, yeah. My point was, a spiked shield could get a weapon enchant, so would be a weapon. A regular shield is not eligible, so doesn't count as a weapon.

The more I think about it, the more I want to get inside the player's head. He's a paladin with a shield, he should have the highest AC in the party already.

Hard to say, but he can take defensive options that aren't straight up AC.

The problem with going Parrying Dagger/Spiked Shield is that you'd sacrifice 1 AC to gain 1 AC. It doesn't 'math' well. He's better off going for a heavy shield, charisma based build around enfeebling strike. Possibly even a gnome-based build so he can go invisible every so often for maximum defensives. Or human. Or tiefling.

He does have the highest AC by about 3 points. He is an obsessive compulsive however and wants to be the highest by 4 points.

Even if that means he will have no meaningful impact on any future combats.

Actually, you cant. An improvised one handed weapon weighs 1-5 lb. An improvised two handed weapon weighs 6-12 lb. Interesting enough, a spiked shield weighs 7 lb, a light shield weighs 6, and a heavy shield weighs 10. Therefor no shield qualifies as an improvised one handed weapon and you cannot use a shield and a parrying dagger and benefit from the defensive property.

Thanks! That is exactly what i was looking for! 5 internet cookies for you!

You could suggest that he spend his standard action every round to go full defensive. He'd have the highest AC by 5 points, and he'd contribute to the battle just as much.

Or go Dwarf so he can at least Second Wind as a Minor and still get the +2 to Defenses, 1/Encounter at least.
