Virtual Tabletops - The Collectible Game

Okay, so I used to do comics, and for a while I did Magic cards...but now apparently I collect sadly-lacking or discontinued software for D&D.

My favorite was and is DMGenie, but now it's dead due to lack of interest by the creator, and the 4E "No Software" nonsense.

I own Fantasy Grounds, which is fairly decent. I also own Klooge, which MIGHT be decent but I'd never recommend it in a million years because they decided that actual user Help and documentation was just SO 1993. So it might be the pinnacle of power, but it's useless and no one should bother with it unless they like banging their heads against the wall.

So now I see Battlegrounds, and I think "Hold on...we've been down this road before"....

Any advice? I don't like PCGen, and in fact I don't want anything Excel based or super-computer-y....I don't want to think about Linux while playing D&D. I want a nice graphical user interface, and the ability to move little dudes around on a map with conceal/reveal ability. Ideally it could measure distances, and allow for graphical tokens.

I don't need it to calculate hit points, attacks, or anything as DMGenie still works for me.

Fantasy Grounds map utilities are too funky - the only way to get a grid is to manually edit out all grid lines from your map...Klooge is slightly better, but only because I got lucky enough to find someone online who felt it was their duty to document some things for these jokers.

Is Battlegrounds just more of the same?

You should try MapTools as well. And ScreenMonlkey. And OpenRPG. And Viewing Dale. Gotta collect them all!

Personally, I use and like klooge.

Battlegrounds has a nice 64-page User Manual. It was great documentation back when v1.0 was released, but a lot has changed or been added to the program since then, rendering the original User Manual slightly obsolete. I'm currently updating the User Manual to cover all the new features up through BRPG v1.4g (due out soon). At well over 100 pages, I think I can safely say that this will be the most thorough User Manual of any VTT program.

On Klooge...

I have to agree with phloog bout Klooge. I am a fan of the product, but not their official support. Their documentation system is dreadful.

I am hoping to see a better manual come out sometime.

It took a lot longer to finish than I had expected, but the new User Manual for BRPG is now available. It's still in draft form, because I want the user community to have a chance for input before the final version is released. But I'd say it's about 98% done.
