A Few simple questions (Im new to DND)

Hey, I'm pretty new to DnD. I have been playing with some friends and want to clear a couple of thing sup, thanks for reading this thread and I'm sure if you've been playing for a while you can answers these easily!

1) My daily Thunder Hawk Rage allows me to use Thunder Hawk Rage Attack once per turn. The attack is Strength vs Fort and says Hit : You knock the secondary target prone. It doesn't do any weapon damage but has +2 from an item / feat of mine.

My question is, what does it mean by secondary target, does it mean I cannot knock someone down and then hit them? I have to hit someone and then knock another enemy down? Proceeding an attack?

2) Tiger's Leap. It read's "Make an athletics check to jump with a +5 power bonus. You are considered to have a running start and can move as far as the check allows.

Does this mean I roll a d20, add +5 and the resulting number is how many spaces I can move?

Or.. do I add the +5 to my roll and then add my athletics modifier ?

And do I jump over players? what about enemies? Do I grant attacks of opportunity?

3) Pressing Strike, It says Effect : Before attack, shift 2 squares. You can move through an enemy but cannot be there at the end.. My question is, do I have to announce who I am attacking before I make the shift or can I use it to shift at an enemy and attack them? Or.. do I even have to attack at all? Can I simply use it as a shift and let my attack "fizzle" ?

4) Most of my skills say Hit : 1[W] blah blah. and then below say Effect : blah blah

My question is, because the "Effect : " is not on the same line or string as the Hit :, does the "Effect" happen even if I miss? I'm asking for all skills in general.

5) Lastly, the Deity Feat Corellon's Grace
Trigger : Creature within 10 squares of you spends an action point
Effect : You take a move.

Can I use this when I use an action point? Or only someone else.

Thank you

You use the power and than under effect it says you may make a secondary attack each turn, with that attack if you hit, you knock someone prone..

A secondary attack follows a first attack.. So you can use an at-will and than use this attack to try and knock someone down.

2) Tiger's Leap. It read's "Make an athletics check to jump with a +5 power bonus. You are considered to have a running start and can move as far as the check allows.

1d20 + Athletics + 5 power bonus + misc.

You can jump over allies if you beat there height, also over enemies but you would provoke if you jump to close to them..

3) Pressing Strike, It says Effect : Before attack, shift 2 squares. You can move through an enemy but cannot be there at the end.. You shift and than designate a target and i would rule you can fizzle the attack..

Effects happen on a miss or a hit

Hmmm raw you can do it on your own to.. rai i think its not used that way.. not clear for me..

1. Secondary Target just means that it does not have to be the same target as the primary. It can be the same, or can be different. It will specify in the target line. if it does not, [or you're using two different powers] then the secondary target can be anything.

2. 1d20+Athletics+5, the amount you move is based on your athletics roll as if you had moved the requisite before the attack

3. You can indeed "attack the air". Just designate a square you want to attack and you will attack the air. You can also shift two squares and then target an enemy that was not in melee range before you made the attack[usually]

4. Yes. The effect line happens regardless of whether or not you hit

5. Up to your DM, but usually if "you" are included, it will mention it specifically. As in "you or your allies". In this case though, you are certainly a creature, and since if you drop an area burst on yourself you still get hit iirc, i see no reason why you could not trigger this when you spend an action point

Except: The power is an immediate Interrupt, which you only get one of per turn, and you can't spend them on your turn.

To clarify on the jumping distance... for athletics checks to jump:
Non-running start: Your check / 10, rounded down, is your jump distance (so a 0-9 is 0 squares, 10-19 is 1, 20-29 is 2, 30-39 is 3, etc)
Running jump: Your check / 5, rounded down, is your jump distance (so 0-4 is 0 squares, 5-9 is 1 square, 10-14 is 2 squares, 15-19 is 3 squares, 20-24 is 4 squares, etc)

A "running start" simply means moving 2+ squares before the jump. Tiger's leap lets you do a "running" jump without moving; in other words, it basically doubles the distance if it wasn't a running jump.

Easiest way to figure out long jump distances: if you got a running start, your total skill check result is the number of feat you jump. Divide in half if you didn't get a running start.

Thank you guys so much for all of your amazing help I appreciate it so much.

One problem for me is I think my DM thinks he knows all of the rules but has been missing a lot LOL. I want to tell him some of the things but im not sure he'll listen.

My main problem is in the PHB it doesn't really say in english that Effects : Happen regardless of you hitting, it just says that they can happen without hits all the time or sometimes, where can I find tangeable evidence that they happen regardless of hits.

Also, I can charge anytime I want as a standard action, but do I have to be in a directly straight line from my target or can I even charge around corners? The wording in the book doesn't say anything about straight lines, only that you need to move direclty to the nearest square where you can attack and you must move atleast 2 sqaures away.

Lastly, about tiger's leap i've been getting mixed responses. Running start with tiger's leap is the roll + my athletics (15) + the 5 power bonus, divided by 5.

So If I roll a 15, I will have a total of 35. Which will let me leap 7 squares?
And what If i want to leap over someone's head? Do I use the vertical leap rules at the same time as the horizontal leap rules?
Thank you !

PHB page 59 for the Effects (finding stuff in the book can be a hassle sometimes, but if you're looking for something power related that you can't find in the combat section, it's usually a good idea to look at the reading a power section)

as for the leap, it would seem you are correct according to the rules as I understand them...looking at the PHB on page 182-183, if you are doing a long jump, your vertically cleared squares are equal to one quarter of the distance horizontally...so counting in squares, if you jump 7 squares horizontally, you would jump 7/4=1 (rounded down) squares, which would clear a dwarf, halfling, or gnome...but using feet, 35/4=8 (rounded down) which would clear most all medium sized creatures (I would hope that your DM uses feet for jumping over someone, as their height can be a bit specific)
