This thread has been inspired by a number of other threads. Particularly, this one. My knowledge of and my appreciation for retroclones and similar Roleplaying Games has increased dramatically.

So, I want to support them, be it:

  • Basic Fantasy Role-Playing Game
  • Castles & Crusades
  • Labyrinth Lord
  • Mazes & Minotaurs
  • OSRIC
  • Spellcraft & Swordplay
  • Swords & Wizardry
(I think that is all of them; apologies if I have missed any)

I can think of no better way than to write adventures for you to use and enjoy. Hopefully, you will see a poll at the top of this post. I want to know what flavor of 'Old School' floats your boat enough to keep you coming back to it (Other than traditional Basic/AD&D). If you are so inclined, please feel free to add a comment regarding what exactly attracts you to your Old School Game of choice; I'm keenly interested!

I have and would play the originals over the clones.
In my 1e game, I use my AD&D books and my OSRIC book and printouts side by side. Really, they're overlapping and complementary.

I don't see a significant difference, rule-wise, between playing OSRIC and playing 1e. :) Nor, for that matter, between adventures designed for one or the other.

This is also true for me in the 1E game that I want to start..

I'm partial to the B/X rules as far as official- and the retro clones/games that emulate the original D&D game (i.e not AD&D)

For the retro games- I'm partial to Spellcraft & Swordplay as a "variant", and Swords & Wizardry as a "hews much closer to the original" version. I also love BFRPG, just that S&S does the "variant" thing better for my tastes.

C&C just didn't hold up for me (nor my group) under actual play- Not a fan of the SIEGE engine (among other things)

No Hackmaster?

I have Castles and Crusades and like it, but I think I'm with other posters that if I'm going to play a retro, I'll probably play with the original stuff instead of a clone.

I use Swords & Wizardry at the game table and refer to the original 1974 rules and supplements for some houserules and pretty much all additional materials the game uses. I see my campaign very much as an OD&D campaign, so I don't really separate the clone from the original either.

S&W, S&S, OSRIC and C&C are my favorite old school products out of the list provided. There are others, though. Like Epees & Sorcellerie, the French-speaking OD&D retroclone.

I haven't had much chance to see most of the retroclones, but I do have C&C. Still, I'd prolly play the original with a few tweaks (AC goes up not down, for instance)- either B/X or 1e (or a mix of both).
