GURPS 4th Edition Online Game Thread

I concur with cinematic as a choice. Generally speaking I prefer genres where there is a "something special" that comes from a source other than machines

That's 2 for Cinematic.
As for something special....I it made NO restrictions and with player specified limitations for a reason.
(Just as an example and not to be taken for seriously but there is no reason why an Autodueler could not be a psi or into voodoo to maintain his driving "edge"......maybe people just THINK it's a gimmick when in fact....kinda like what if the "Iron Shiek" from old school afternoon wrestling were REALLY pashtun royalty?)
All you two need do is come eye to eye on the setting of your gaming experience and any new players will be informed of the current preference but thats not to say a new player may not suggest something even more interesting than what was originally chosen.....as long as there is player concensus I have no problems with running any setting mentioned so far in the thread.
I will however mention for ANY new player that the game is locked in Cinematic Play, regardless of game setting.
(Horror may work quite nicely as well....and the good part is it can be worked into virtually any setting with relative ease.)
If we still remain "player light" after another week of waiting I will simply dig up a few npc's or you the players may run with two characters instead of one....depending on your preferences.
I will be lurking for a while.

Peace & Light (and television is for the weakminded but reality television is for the brain dead!)

As far as game setting, I'm flexible (just like to game) but the Mad Max theme is not my cup of tea, though I'm sure I could create an interesting character to play. But I'm NOT driving - I get enough of that in real life:) I'll ride shotgun and do something "interesting" ... something other than shooting a gun, hopefully. We could play a Weird West version but instead of the Old West it's the New Future.

It may be that Horror or Space are good compromises. I've played some Space (and Traveller - showing my age) but really haven't played Horror. gain I'm open but I'd list fantasy at the top of my list and Auto-Duel toward the bottom.

And funny enough, I remember the Iron Sheik fellow. Are you inferring that those events were not real? They're staged? Rats! Next think you'll do is tell me there is no Tooth Fairy.

Once more they were only examples....it will be up to you and Insight and whoever else joins to decide on the setting.
I already had you listed as fantasy first.
My only input is to tell you which settings I have material for.
If you feel you are "compromising" then I fear you may have missed my point.
Play what YOU want to play and settle for nothing less.
If Desert of Desolation is not something you would wish to try then perhaps a different module but my primary concern is for material with usable maps....I have loads of modules....but all of them MUST have maps that can be loaded into maptool and that is the sole adventure limitation in my opinion.....everything else can be tailored to the situation.
(If I can get my scanner working even this will not be an issue.)

Peace & Light

I'm OK with fantasy but I get enough of that with D&D. Horror or Space would be acceptable compromises to me. Or some combination thereof.

I'm new to the forum but I know GURPS fairly well (used to GM 3rd edition) and am certainly "looking for group". My schedule is flexible and I have most of the 4th edition materials as well as the official character builder.

My vote would be for something along the lines of Dungeon Fantasy. Using GURPS to play old school modules sounds like immense fun.

With you that will make 3 players.
That is two votes for fantasy and one for Horror or Space.
I have never tried the gurps character builder but I have no problems with it being used.
I will be out of contact most of today....our online group meets on fridays for 4e D&D.
I will resume lurking the thread tomorrow.

Peace & Light (and high realism mixed with a TSR module is a good way to get indescriminately dead!)

I'm cool with Fantasy too and I'm especially cool (frozen?) if it involves classic D&D modules.

In terms of Fantasy (since that seems the preferred route so far), what GURPS resources are generally used? All I have are the two "main" books, but I can get access to more if need be.

Fantasy is core.
Magic is also core.
Banestorm is helpful but not required.
Dungeon Fantasy is a MUST.
Thaumatology will be permitted but I have not delved too deeply into it yet as I prefer martial templates and lens' when I am a player.

If we are going with the classics (as we are)...might I inquire as to the make up of the party?
I will admit it will be a bit difficult if a player lacks the valid source material...I may or may not be of assistance in that arena.
Optimally we will have a fourth player and an npc will be assigned to round out what the party seems weakest on.
Design your characters based on the Desert of Desolation series....eg; artic survival will not come into play if you follow my meaning.
I might suggest that 250 points may be a good starting place for cinematic characters but I will check into Dungeon Fantasy for template builds and average point costs.....a D&D style pc will cost bigtime points....more than you may suspect....perhaps even 300 without too much cinematic "flare"....they are mostly designed to seem cinematically capable from the ground up in the Dungeon Fantasy series and perhaps Luck & Serendipity or Daredevil will be as far as we need to go.
The only Dungeon Fantasy volume I do not have is the final one on Clerics.
On a final note, I will be sure to heighten the horror-related aspects of the module so perhaps it is not very fortuitous that "Clerics" is the one volume I lack!
Desert of Desolation is reknown for heightening tension and horror related play with an abudance of demons, devils and undead.
Heavy armor and survival in the desert will undoubtedly be a bigger enemy to the players than most of creatures they will encounter....at least npcs and monsters aren't dumb enough to stumble around a cursed desert without enough water....now if WE only had that much common sence!

Peace & Light

So "Dungeon Fantasy" is a series of some kind? I'll have to investigate. Is it impossible to just make a character using the main books + Fantasy? What's in "Dungeon Fantasy" that's not in the other books?

Dungeon Fantasy is a series of examples of how to run a GURPs dungeon crawl, essentially. The first volume is a series of pre-made templates in the spirit of D&D classes. To my knowledge every template is made using rules already found in the basic set + magic but it is helpful to have the templates.
