[sblock=Quozen][sblock=Rules Blether]If Quozen just takes his normal turn, he'd be presumably 60 feet away from Gillin before Gillin's turn, and inbetween a UT could act. Not really the intended escort action.
So, we interpreted it as trying to perform simultaneous or near simultaneous movement actions, with no opportunity for UTs to intervene, with two possible ways for them to move simultaneously using readied actions.
The more straightforward way is for Quozen to ready an action to move when Gillin moves; Gillin moves; Quozen therefore moves on the same count, keeping 5 feet ahead of Gillin all the way. The problem with this is that Quozen has spent his standard action and can't respond to anything that should occur before Gillin acts or during the move.
The second way is slightly more complicated. Quozen delays until Gillin does anything; Gillin readies an action to move when Quozen does; assuming there's a visible sign of Gillin looking poised and expectant (I'm slightly doubtful about this step; perhaps he'd just say "Let's go!" as a free action), Quozen moves; Gillin therefore moves on the same count, keeping 5 feet behind. This leaves Quozen with his standard action to respond to anything that should happen along the way. I think this second version is kinder.
Fine. We needed to figure all this out to see precisely where Quozen was after his regular initiative count and whether he had spent his standard action on readying to move.
The dice then conspired to make the rules-wrangling irrelevant, but I couldn't roll them until I knew where Quozen was. Thank you, dice.[/sblock]Gillin and Quozen engage in a staring match as the half-drunk old man tries to work out why the elf seems so distracted, and the elf, through the fog that has enveloped him, tries dimly to perceive whether Gillin will accompany him.
Before any slow decisions can be made, they are preempted. From the corners of their eyes, both men see a sight out of nightmares. When first encountered, the creature was a spreading pancake or shapeless ball, shifting from one form to another, but always with only a single pair of tentacles. Now, this thing is nothing but a mass of countless tentacles, writhing in all directions. Shadows like smoke wreathing from burning sticks blur its outline. It rolls and grasps and slithers from beside the near market stall directly east.
OOG: UT2 acted while Quozen was delaying but before Gillin readied an action, so both have full sets of actions available. Quozen is up, still.[sblock=Map]Truncated view. The glowing yellow object next to Midias of course represents the discarded sunrod.

"What on Gundar's green earth is that?" the old man yelps.
