Does anyone want to talk about D&D?

That is something about Pathfinder... my Inquisitor got all of his 11 HP taken out in a single alligator bite last encounter : -/ great.

That's funny because that self same Inquisitor ran into an alligator in a previous
encounter and crittted it (I've eliminated Crit confirms in my game as well). We use the Paizo Critical Hit and Fumble decks and she drew what amounted to a save or die card for the alligator. All the gator needed to do was make a DC 13 or 14 save. I failed the roll. So she decapitated the alligator in her first shot.

So revenge! For you inquisitor! By his distant cousin...another Inquisitor!

InVinoVeritas - Is that whip PC in 4e? I'm guessing not, since you're disarming, etc...

Yes, it's 3.5. Or 3.0. Or Pathfinder. I've been on a Bard kick for about a decade. I've had PCs (and players) terrified of a gnome bard villain. I've had bard good guys, bard bad guys, bard leaders, slimy bards, manly bards, you name it. It's all about the bard.

Heck, I was into bards in 2e.

Man, that's gonna kind of kill your social life.

On the upside he doesn't have to deal with any racial bad rep for the minotaurs, but his social is definitely "Meh".

He did start out looking human, so he tends to think of himself as a transformed human. He also a human adoptive family, so it's not all bad.

Currenlty playing in a 4e campaign and going through one of the WOTC dungeon modules - "Heathen". I can see why people are less than impressed with WOTC offerings, but, it has been mostly fun.

It's been a real pleasure exploring a new system to be honest. I'm rather enjoying 4e.

Hussar, I've been looking at Heathen since I started my 4e campaign 2 years ago. If the gang ever get to it now I'm going to have to do a lot of rewriting. (So far all I've done is a variation of the raid on the refugees that opens the adventure.)

How has the initial skill challenge played out for your group?

I'm not DMing, so, all my impressions are on the other side of the screen. The initial skill challenge was BORING. Go to town, make a diplomacy/whatever chatty check, get the info, go to the next town. Wash, rinse repeat. Bleaaahh.

The DM redid the next skill challenge, in the evil town (forget the name sigh) when trying to find information about what was going on with the person we were following (trying to avoid spoilers here). The DM reworked the skill challenge and made it flow very nicely and narratively. Engaged all the players and more than a few different skills. Worked nicely and smoothly.

The fights seem a bit ... wonky. Too much, 1 fight no fight for a week, 1 fight, no fight for a week - too much screwing around to be honest. Fun fights, but, because there's no follow up, you can pretty much guess that you can nova on the fight and blow dailies. The pacing needs work. Less throwaway fights and more focus on what's going on.

If I was rewriting it, based on my very limited knowledge of the module, I think I'd string three or four encounters together, then skip ahead, then string three or four encounters together, instead of the way it's set up with too much time between encounters.

Just chiming in after reading the first page. I agree with the OP.

As to talking about D&D, I am probably planning a mass murder. I am about to run a group consisting three veteran players and four newbies through the Tomb of Horrors. Methinks death is in the air. ;)

Hussar, thanks for the reply. Your comments on the first skill challenge reinforce my thoughts about how to run (and how not to run) that.

As for the fights/nova thing: in my latest overland travel skill challenge, I used failure to get an extended rest as one of the consequences of a failed check. That way I could use the standard approach to encounter balancing without having to have an implausible number of combats in a given day.
