LEB Discussion Thread '10 Pt 2

Hasn't WotC said that, in the event of an item being printed in two sources, go with the newer source? I think I remember reading that somewhere...

The rules have not had an official update to them. They just released a different set of rules for Flaming weapons in the DM kit. There was no errata.

I mentioned this in L4W, but curious these judges thoughts on it. Now we're in a situation where say Player A has a couple core books (being say PHB and HotXX) and wants to make a PC. They dutifully check the latest errata documents and find no changes to the Flaming weapon. There's nowhere this "update" is contained outside of that boxed set and the online tools (which are not rules sources).
The DM Rulebook in the DM Kit is published by WotC. It hasn't been folded into the errata likely because they are waiting on the April 30 update (as the DM Kit came out 10/19/10 and the last update to the PDFs was 10/5/10). I suspect it'll show up in the April 30th update promised as its made it the CB.

As for this particular issue: While it breaks some nice combos (and one's I've exploited), it does make it more in line w/ how the weapon actually worked in previous editions. Of course, they could have just gone w/ the old "adds the fire keyword and damage type) interpretation as well, but apparently that isn't in favor these days.

In general, if we have a difference between the online tools and published sources, our rules still favor published sources to online ones. In this case, however, we have a newer published source which would take precedence over the older one (there are not two versions of minotaurs, just the one in the PH3, for example).

I just find it silly that Flaming has that change but not Lightning or Frost or Gith Silver Sword, but c'est la vie I guess. Ah well, Ashir barely used the two powers affected by this (Winged Horde and Grasping Shadows).

No one said WotC was consistent. ;)

Hopefully (big if) they'll standardize one way or the other...

So we don't use it until it is officially errated? And I cannot do my rebuild until then (so I will have to have approved the character twice?

BTW, the old version isn't no longer available through the DDI account.

Its in a grey zone—one I see as black, but another judge doesn't. In any case, I believe we have in the past, when an item became changed, to allow a swap of that item for one of equal or lower level (but no excess gold if the switch is lower). I would either wait to submit your level up or submit two version (w/ and w/o the fix) and we'll determine which one is valid when needed.

I'll see what renau1g, TwoHeadsBarking, and KarinsDad have to say (and EvolutionKB and evilbob if they're around).

... to allow a swap of that item for one of equal or lower level ...

Not quite enough, I fear. I hope to be allowed to switch out some spells that are now unthematic (and much less effective) for my mage, too. (Not all, of course, he will stay with his charm/enchantment spells.)

The one-time rebuild seems appropriate.
:( I wanted to save this for later, not as a reaction for stupid errata. If this would be the way to go, I will just ignore the spellbook feature for know and will just change 1 spell each level-up, until I got rid of the non-charm/non-fire ones. Thanks.

Could I replace my

accurate flaming staff with an attached Khyber Shard of the Fiery Depth

with an

accurate staff of ruin with an attached Syberis Shard of the Mage?

The total cost is much lower and I really see it as one item (got only the old shard because of the flaming feature).

Here's a quick and hopefully easy querry:

I have two PCs. One is level 4 and the other will be level 6 when this question is relevant.

Would I be able to retire both and bring the level 4 back at a level 6? I know it's possible to retire a PC and bring them back at the same level with a massive rewrite.
