Here's my shot:

The Great Awakening

Two hundred years ago, the world was on the course for destruction. To the south it is whispered unspeakable horrors set upon the pinnacle of civilization. A hell-powered Empire battled with others to rule the land. Monsters of all kinds were on the rise. Elsewhere, arcane cabals warred in open for the claim to enslave their neighbors.

Two hundred years ago, whole communities in several regions had a plan. With powerful magic they hid themselves away underground and went to sleep. They believed the world must be better when they awoke.

The spell has ended, and all have woke. Some have been sealed inside their tombs and must venture out into the lightless depths below the world. Others emerge into a frigid landscape where the sun has not shown in a century or more. Ruins reclaimed by the jungles, haunted by the horrors beyond, await some. And more discover themselves trapped beneath a great, unbreakable dome with the remnants of the Empire and their enemies at the foot of an open gate to Hell.

Where will you emerge, and what will you find?

<begin pitch> Greyhawk <end pitch>

It's no Dragonlance, but hey. ;)

What, me biased? ;)

(Truth be told, I'd love to see Greyhawk return in a setting book.)

To the original poster, I'd like to see something dealing with swashbuckling adventures, fantasy style. Thing is, I think that's possible with either Mystara or Spelljammer. So it may be that one of them needs to be looked upon through a new "lens."

What they need to do is dragonlance in DDI. First it would create more jobs for people, fans could write in and contribute. They could eventually get a setting book after a year or more of articles. I cant believe they haven't done it yet . I just seems so sensible.

Along those lines, an Open Design treatment of a NEW campaign setting via DDi with a strong lead designer (Perkins maybe) and several very clear design goals ("This is what the setting feels like, here's the nation/city/villain/god/ etc we need from you guys this month...") would have massive appeal to me- even if I'm sitting the sidelines watching, or able to actually vote on my favorite of their favorite proposals.

I don't think anything Open Design style would ever happen with a company of WotC's size. Hell, I'd be surprised if it happened with a company Paizo's size.

I guess my line of thinking is it's inexpensive and easy content, as it's largely customer generated. It also helps in the 'connecting with the community' angle, and if it turns out not to be popular, they can just discontinue it without any loss (though my gut tells me it'd be a hit).

I mean I'd appreciate it, embrace it really, and I think a lot of buzz could be generated from the monthly submissions. Even better if Perkins gave a little bit of design critique to the better ones being voted on (like he did with the minions contest), as well. If it's too much for one designer, have guest designers came in monthly to handle some facet or another (I actually would prefer that).

DDi is an amazing suite of tools and the content is getting better, now humanize it with something like this. I honestly just want to be engaged, and the creation of a new setting would be a cool way to do it.
