D&D 5E Everything aboot 5E looks boring.

Though it was completely forseeable when DDI was introduced, that this was a real possibility that is almost guaranteed to happen at some point. Not saying that they made this clear enough to anyone who hopped on the train, but I think most people should always have been aware of this.

It was 100% clear to me from the start. All I was countering was that "they can't take your books away" is not a valid statement for those of us who rely on DDi to prep and run the game. They can take my book away this time and if I don't end up liking 5E I guess I won't be playing D&D anymore. I am hopeful for the final product but my enthusiasm so far is waning. The only semi-constructive criticism I can offer is that it feels like a bunch of guys sitting around the kitchen table writing down a bunch of random house rules hoping that a coherent game will evolve. To me that's bad, I'm sure others like that feel. I assume over time that feel will fade as the game gels better, but so far my initial excitement for 5e has lessened considerably.

It's kind of frightening and kind of amusing how many "don't let the door hit you on the way out" voices there are for an edition that prides itself on being inclusive.

Sure, "D&DN is boring" isn't really constructive, but then neither is "Well I like it so your viewpoint is invalid."

This comment is :):):):):):):):).

There were like a dozen of us who posted, "Hey, tell us what is boring you..." before there was a single "don't let the door..." post.

The flip side of the DDI issue is that the cost of keeping 4E DDI up and running is extremely low, and it provides a steady revenue stream. As long as there's a substantial 4E player base, it's basically free money.

I expect 4E will remain available through DDI for quite a while. There may not be any new content, but I doubt the old is going anywhere.

I think it's definitely a boring game right now. Of course we haven't seen the full game yet.

It's boring because all the rules just resolve stuff. There aren't a lot of rules that make fun stuff happen yet. No content generation tools, tools for keeping track of organizations, tools for keeping track of NPC relationships, adventure building tools, nothing to spend money on, alignment doesn't do anything, no tools for tracking shifts in alignment. There's no way to earn XP besides fighting monsters. XP doesn't give the players a goal; it's just a circuitous way to control the pace of advancement.

Right now it's combat and some ability score checks. I.e. it's one of those RPGs that believes the purpose of RPGs is to allow you to play cops and robbers without getting into arguments about who shot whom. Which is boring, yes.

Hopefully the fun stuff is coming.

I want to playtest a first draft of the DMG.

Alternatively, no RPG can codify in game rules how you ask and answer questions of morality and theme. D&D provides a framework for fictional resolution of situations that address such goals, taking care of the details so that your attention can be focused on the big picture.

I hope never to have to roll a d20 to determine whether "the ends justify the means", or what "the meaning of sacrifice" is. :p

Some have tried. Pendragon was famous for it's passions and virtues and how you had to roll against your "frugality" to go to a fest or roll against "temerity" to withdraw from a battle. You even had a score to know how much you loved your lady.
