One thing to bear in mind too, especially at low tiers, is that your pools are not just what you draw from to use abilities and Effort, they are also your hit points.
So use them carefully. In some cases it's not worth the 'damage' to use Effort. For example, if you have to roll versus Might or take 2 points of Might damage from a poison or something, don't bother spending Effort to aid the roll. You'll lose the Might pool either way (unless there's additional badness that results from the poison, which could be worth the Effort to avoid
