13th Age Demon: Despoiler (from 13th Age)

Obviously, its a bit early to start looking at building monsters as the MM is not out, but I am bored and it seemed an interesting exercise to try and reconstruct the maths. These guys are humanoid demons from 13th Age, they also remind me a lot of Dremora from Elder Scrolls.

Demon: Despoiler
Medium Fiend (Demon), Chaotic Evil
Armor Class 16 (Breastplate)
Hit Points 52 (8d8 + 16)
Speed 30 ft.
STR 13 (+1) DEX 17 (+3) CON 15 (+2) INT 18 (+4) WIS 15 (+2) CHA 18 (+4)
Damage Resistances cold, fire, lightning; bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing from non magical weapons that aren't cold‐forged iron
Damage Immunity Poison
Condition Immunity Poisoned
Skills Deception +6, Insight +4
Senses darkvision 90 ft., passive Perception 12
Languages Abyssal, Common; telepathy 90 ft.
Challenge 4 (1,100 XP)

Actions
Multiattack. The despoiler makes two melee attacks.
Scimitar. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5ft., one target. Hit 7 (1d6+3) slashing damage.
Abyssal Whispers (Recharge 5-6).. The despoiler chooses one creature within 90 feet of it that it can see. The target must succeed on a DC 16 Wisdom saving throw, or it can't take reactions until the end of its next turn. On its turn, the target can't move, and it uses its action to make a melee or ranged attack against a randomly determined creature within range. If the target can't attack, it does nothing on its turn.

Reactions
Sow Discord. If the despoiler is missed by a ranged attack or makes its saving throw versus a spell, the despoiler can choose another creature within 30 feet of it that it can see. The attack or spell affects the chosen creature instead of the despoiler. If the despoiler would still take Damage or some other effect from the attack or spell, this ability does not negate that damage or effect.

Despoilers look like purple-skinned high-elves, often with impressive curving horns. In combat they seek to turn their foes against one another.

Hiya Jadrax. Congratulations for introducing what I believe is our first D&D Next homebrew monster on this forum.

I don't know enough about the system to critique the stats, but it seems to have a lot of damage resistances.

Thanks. I have added a ; to clarify the Damage Resistances. I think I have given it the 'default Demon' set, but we won't know that till the Monster Manual.

I have also changed Sow Discord a bit based upon some play testing. It now works on spells that do not require an attack roll, but cant effect melee attacks as it just seemed to jarring in play.

Changed the Abyssal Whispers ability to a recharge power, because it happening ever round seemed to really upset my testers.

Swapped Dex and Wis and added a Multiattack ability to compensate for the above, plus based on feedback from surfarcher

I had totally forgotten I had done this.

Having now gotten the Monster Manual, it should have 'Damage Immunity: Poison' and 'Condition Immunity: Poisoned'

You could drop the Resistance to Non Magical Weapons as it is not an ability all Demons have, but given this guys relatively low Hit Points and very annoying ability I am not sure I would.

Working through it...
 • Hitpoints should be 52 (=4.5 * 8 + 16)
 • Using the DMG CR method suggests this is a CR5 creature. I would actually peg it at CR4 myself.
