D&D 5E For cantrips is "level" level or class level?

Title asks the question.
At what point does a barb 1/warlock X get 2 beams from eldritch blast? Where X=4 or X=5? I think level in this case is total level (otherwise I'm unclear how the cantrip-granting feats would work). Thoughts?

And the level limitation for warlock invocations? I'm guessing that it supposed to be class level, but...

Actually I think even that is total level, but you only get new invocations when you go up in WARLOCK level...so you could say go warlock 2/Whatever 17/Warlock 1 and pick up an invocation like Lifedrinker or or Master of Many Forms as your 3rd invocation known (and change one of your existing Invocations to something requiring a high level also).

You could use this to get Thirsting Blade at character level 5 with only <strike>two</strike>three levels of warlock, which is going to be nice for my Bard/Warlock.

The book's actually pretty clear, if one can divorce oneself from knowledge of prior editions. (It's difficult for me, but I'm getting there.)

If you simply take the rules as written, without any prior-edition interpretation... The concept of "class level" isn't even called out as something that exists. It's vaguely implied here and there--how multiclass features like spells and multiple attacks do and don't stack--but only somewhat, and only in those very specific instances. Everywhere else in the book, it says "levels." Not "class levels." Not "some levels."

I really don't think there's a question or need for clarification on this one. Levels is levels is levels.

Thanks. And awesomesauce

Yeah, 2 levels in Warlock can be very fun.

Telepathy and communication with anything from lv1 onwards. Or temphp every time you kill anything (just Warlock level + Chamod, but still).
Hex spell has no save, and gets you extra damage on every hit, and you can bounce it from target to another on death.
Devil's Sight for never being hindered by darkness (regular darkvision still gets Perception penalties in the dark), even the Darkness spell.
If you have the Cha for it, Eldritch Blast + Agonizing Blast + Repelling Blast, for great ranged damage and control.
Lifedrinker to add more damage to your every melee hit from lv12 onwards.
At-will Hold Monster from lv15 onwards.

Not too tempting for the full casters (since 2 levels is more slots and an extra level of spell power for them), but for others (especially Paladin), it could be nice. Because hey, your non-caster levels aren't getting you much sweet stuff anyways.
