I wouldn't go so far as to call an otyugh filthy, but it's definitely dirty. But otyughs got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Someone here at EN World has a wonderful example of a typical conversation with an otyugh in their signature. I'm sorry I can't remember who it is.
@Tonguez had the quote from @IcyCool. It cracked me up every time I saw it, so I saved it.

Otyugh: "Do you have poop?"

Oh, really? Do you recall which webcomic it came from? I'd like to give it a read.

I can try to find it for you, but it was years ago found by googling "dnd webcomic" basicly. Also didnt mean any disrespect to anyone, that signature was just too familiar to read to be just a coincidence.

Exceptions exists though. Hyenas use 90% and eat bones as well, which makes them produce balls of undigested bones.

I think this one is a little off. Hyenas can ingest and process more of a prey's body than other animals (they have extremely acidic stomach fluids, and can process skin and bone that other animals cannot). But I don't think they get quite that much higher nutritional content out of what they ingest.

If that were possible, I would expect more animals would do it. The energy savings in having to eat/hunt that much less would be phenomenal!

yeah I think it's sort of that way as well... why would hyenas have that much stomach acid anyway?

I mean, would there even be any nutritional value in eating poo? That's pretty gross... talk about bad breath! :-S
(You could probably smell one coming a mile away... well, not literally.) Makes me wonder, do Otyughs eat their OWN poo? (Waste not, want not...) Double gross if they do!!! :-S

Most herbivores only extract 40-60% of their food's nutritional value. Most carnivores, a bit higher. And that's before the additional value "added" by various molds and yeasts in the environment.
