D&D 5E What are the Roles now?

Well everyone is entitled to their opinion... Just out of curiosity... what role would a Battlemaster Fighter correspond to?

Not really. I mean you can make a 5e character to match that 4e role, but it's misleading because you can use the same 5e class to match a few of the 4e roles based on the way feats and backgrounds and subclasses work. I.e., I could use a fighter in 5e and depending on how I built him, could be a leader, defender, or striker. Heck, one of my 5e fighters plays the role of a thief as well (urchin background and skulker feat).

Avoid the danger and hit VIPs?
Damage multiple foes and/or weaken enemies?
Inspire, heal, aid, and advise?

Yep this is my view of it and is why I don't see value in trying to shoehorn the 5e classes into 4e roles.

If it "depends" I'm not seeing how they fit very well...

Because it does fit.
If a character isn't doing one of the combat roles in the 4th Ed PHB, he or she probably doesn't help in combat.

So he's a... striker.
Role character match.

But the 4e books says he should be a defender. Which is what we're (or at least I) am getting at. 4e shoehorned classes into a particular role by telling you what role each class is. 5e isn't like that at all.

Also, he's not a striker at all. he doesn't do any more damage than any other standard fighter.
